Job Cuts Get Brutal: Sprint, Pfizer, Home Depot, Caterpillar

The job loss tally so far today: 54,500. Cuts are coming across industries as further weakness in the economy keeps major employers slashing away.

On the same day it agreed to buy rival drugmaker Wyeth, Pfizer said it would cut 15 percent from its combined workforce (that's a bit less than 19,500 jobs). Meanwhile, Caterpillar is faring poorly in the global recession. It's cutting its workforce by 20,000 including 11 percent of its workforce, or 12,000 jobs, and 8,000 contractors. Home Depot, a lingering victim of the downturn in both consumer spending and housing, said it would slash another 7,000 jobs as it shutters its high-end EXPO business. And finally, Sprint Nextel is eliminating 14 percent of its workforce, or 8,000 jobs.

Update: Add another 6,000 to the tally above. Philips Electronics is cutting too.

SPOKANE -- Every Papa John's pizza restaurant in the Inland Northwest closed Tuesday without warning and may not reopen for some time.

According to corporate officials at the company's headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, 12 locations were shut down, all owned by a group called North Country Pizza.

Papa John's officials say all stores in Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Pullman, Moscow, Yakima, Kennewick, Richland, and Wenatchee closed.

  1. This is getting crazy. And just so readers out there know, not everyone is getting unemployment extensions. Only the people initially laid off back in 2007 and 2008 are getting all the extensions; those laid off in 2009, especially late in 2009 are not getting jack sh*t.

There are going to be lots of homeless unless Congress passes more extensions.

  2. That comment posted at 9:56 is by me. I forgot to add that I got this info. directly from California EDD. I think the reason they are not extending benefits for those laid off more recently is because they have already run out of money for everyone.

    It's going to get brutal.

  3. Oops, meant to say in 9:56 that those laid off in late 2009 are getting jack sh*t. My mistake.

The reason for this, I truly think, is that the state has run out of unemployment funds like many other states.

  4. 15% and 11% of the workforce is a large percentage of workers.

This is getting scary now. Papa John's closing too?

  10. 11:20 I agree, although someone told me that one of the EDD people told him that the workers they are hiring are "welfare moms." No joke.

Also, I've heard the gov. is hiring a lot of tax collectors to go after everyone. So if you're a sadist at heart, that's a good job to go for.

  13. You know it's bad when Pizza is part of the downward trend. I knew a guy that owned 5 Little Caesars Pizza stores. Four years ago, he told me that his stores were very busy because two pizzas were enough to feed the illegals and their boatload of anchor babies, all for 10 bucks.

Things are gonna real ugly now.

  14. Employment in this country will continue to contract at a rapid pace straight through 2010 into 2011. By the end of 2010 so many people will be unemployed that the sheeple will begin to realize exactly why the government started building 700+ FEMA camps all around this country under BILL CLINTON, the same man that sent millions of manufacturing jobs to china and arranged for a chinese national to steal a laptop from Lawrence Livermore national labs with top secret design plans for all our most sophisticated nuclear weapons on it. Notional value of said laptop? About 80 trillion dollars in american research and labor.

We don't owe the chinese anything but a volley of 1000+ Hydrogen bombs on all their major cities and minor villages.

  15. A friend in California who was laid off several months ago, said their unemployment will run out in May of this year. They've tried repeatedly to look for work so far, without success. They're not eligible for another unemployment extention because the first one didn't expire in Dec of 2009. My friend is hoping to find another job before the unemployment runs out. Very sad, what people are coping with.

  20. More layoffs, no surprise, I saw this coming as far back as the 80's, textile, chemical and automotive industries were severly impacted by deals the government made with these MONGREL nations. What concerns me most, is that Americans continually let's this go on and on.

Even though we continually get alarmed at the loss of our jobs to other countries, we just keep on allowing it to happen. When was the last time has anyone met with the snakes in givernment, either state or local to discuss corporate tax rates? When was the last ime someone said "Hell no"! to Walmart or any retailer that sells China, Vietnam or any other MONGREL nations? People, you have heard the term, "no pain no gain"? Well, it's not just for your physical well being. We need to all stand by each other and UNITE and say hell no to anyone that sells, promotes or pushes products made other than America. It's our country, Let's take it back, NOW, before it's to late.

It's called a normal business cycle, they come and go morons

    ReplyDelete
  26. 9:40 this is not a normal business cycle. This is called a DEPRESSION. Massive unemployment, store closures, some that have been in existence for 50 years, housing collapse, record bankruptcies, largest debt in history, more homeless than ever, 46 states are bankrupt and going in default, this is a normal business cycle? Are you in the twilight zone?

    ReplyDelete
  27. When he people who have jobs see their taxes shoot up and hear their employer no longer able to survive at high tax rates and few Bank loans then they will loose their job and there maybe NO UNEMPLOYMENT left for them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 9:40, are your really that ignorant? Or are you just plain stupid? Haven't you been paying attention to any of the indicators? I am not talking about what some smuck from the government or the media says, I am talking about the impact on your or your family. I am almost positive that you are probably not wealthy nor 100% finiancially sound. I am also assured you are totally self sufficient. I doubt you are living on your little island.

If you are paying utilities, food, mortage, fuel or any of the other necessities of living in this country, then my friend you are impacted.

This is not another business cycle. This is something that even the "professionals" have never seen or how to handle. So for you to say that because we have fears and concerns that it makes us morons, really, look into the mirror, you are the one who is amoron, sorry, maybe lost in space.

  29. Noodles123-Am in Monterey County in Cali...Unemployment near 22%...Why is that scary?...Because THAT"S GOVERNMENT #'S!

What's the real #?...Most likely in the 30's...Have 5 friends looking for work 1 got part time 24 hours a week...1 gave up and is moving out of state...3 keep on looking but nothing there...I find myself not taking their calls as it's always a sad conversation mixed with anxiety and me having to send a lil to help them.

The crazy blow up the planet guy commentor does have one righteous point..."People don't give a fuck" anymore as things get harder people seem to be getting more desperate.

    Revolution?...No I don't see it...Plus easily squashed.

Hit and Run Riots?...I see that happening where cities are overwelmed hell breaks loose and looting begins till troops are called in.

Americans are NOT as strong/hardy/smart as they used to be...It's like watching a stroke victim...They know what they want to do and remember that they used to be fast and strong but now they aren't.

Off to Costco to hoard! :P

  30. Listen up people. The comment by 9:40 is a rouse, most likely from a gov. employee or someone who is trying to deceive you.

    This person posted:

"It's called a normal business cycle, they come and go morons"

When you see comments like this attacking those of us who are earnest and know the truth, you can rest assure that the offensive poster HAS AN AGENDA or some sort.

    First of all, ask yourselves

    1. Why is a person who is unconcerned about the problems of the economy coming to this blog
    2. Why is this unconcerned person harassing others who read this blog and calling us morons?
    3. Why is this person who exemplifies both traits mentioned in 1 and 2 also coming here to treat people who are probably suffering economically as if we are stupid and idiotic? Not to mention, adding insult to injury?

You must seriously question those who challenge reality. I will say again, these people have an agenda.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1:14 also wanted to add that it seems suspicious that a person who is not worried about the economy would come to this blog to post and also harass others, and in addition, why would the person feel so strongly against everyone here to call them morons?

If they are so happy go lucky and unconcerned, why the strong language by calling people he or she doesn't know MORONS?

    Clearly, they have an agenda.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not that it really surprises me I guess; but I have not heard one peep of all these 54k layoffs
from any mainstream media outlet Not 1.

So I am trying to verify that Caterpillar cut 20k jobs ??? I went to their website - not a peep
    That's strange

    ReplyDelete
  33. 2:17 It would make perfect sense that you're not hearing anything about these layoffs. I can assure you though that the editor of this blog gets information from bona fide sources.

When my company laid us off they kept assuring us things were okay. Then one day by surprise, WHAMMO! One employee (manager) admitted in the end that they knew all along.

These companies don't want bad publicity either.

Voila, there's a whole lotta jobs for Americans!

Why is America continuing to hire foreigners when Americans need jobs?

    ReplyDelete
  37. To 3:55, are you just stupid or ignorant? What difference does it make as to whether it was a pizza parlor or a high tech. industry, low IQ or high IQ, folks lost their jobs, their means of finiancial support for their familes.

People like you are have your head buried so far in your a-- it makes me ill.

You must be some arrogant little college crap, probably your Mom and Dad worked their tail, so you could go to school so you could sit back and judge folks that did not have the opportunity to go.

Yes I realize business cycles must take place, but one thing you better let sink in, small businesses make up the vast majority of employment in this country. But you probably did not learn this in school.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 7:29 even people with degrees are losing their jobs. I am one of them, and I'm trying to wake people up.

Government jobs are next on the chopping block. Watch out.

  39. Small Business owners are largely forgotten. Thats why I only focus on them. I have experience several members of my family file bankruptcy due to small business failures. I also I suffered through 2 destroyed businesses due to failure however, in my failings I have learned some of the secrets to success. (Who can say they know it all?)
