It Keeps Getting Worse: Government To Withhold Social Security For Hundreds of Thousands

A little–noticed law could soon result in smaller Social Security checks for hundreds of thousands of the elderly and disabled who owe the U.S. money from defaulted loans and other debts more than a decade old.
Social Security benefits are off–limits to creditors, such as credit–card companies and banks. But the U.S. can collect debts to federal agencies by "offsetting," or withholding Social Security and disability payments.
The Treasury currently withholds benefits of 3.1 million Social Security recipients to recover defaulted student–, farm– and small–business loans, unpaid income taxes, amounts veterans owe for health care, and other debts to the government.
Previously, the U.S. hasn't been able to withhold Social Security payments to recover most debts delinquent for more than ten years.
But a provision in the 2008 Farm Bill lifted the ten–year statute of limitations on the government's ability to withhold Social Security benefits in collecting debts other than student loans—for which the statute of limitations was lifted in 1997—and income taxes, where the limit remains 10 years.

  1. I have no problem with this...if money is owed by dependent citizens, at a MINIMUM the money should be deductible from their lovely, stupid "benefits"!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I Think the govt should pay americans a million dollars for each citizen that they stole the tax money from and gave to their buddies at the oil companies and halliburton to fight their fake wars, that had nothing to do with the usa in any way, but to make up fake wmd bullshit to steal the tax payer money all of it should be paid back.

  3. Does it even matter? While I agree with the previous poster, the idea that everyone on Wall Street and HomeLoaners can walk, but someone getting $1K a month, is now liable for $200/month is a crock.

The real point here is that the goobermint is becoming desperate. It knows the jig is almost up. Just look at February's monthly deficit: $221 billion. Come on! How long can that last?

We are so FUBAR it isn't even funny.

  4. No vet should ever have to pay for any health care, period! They should have and expect 100% paid health care in exchange for their military service.

Got it Barry? Make it so you worthless POTUS. I really wanted you to make a difference, you call yourself "black" even though you mama is lily white. You are a joke! Please resign NOW!.

  5. I would be amazed and or shocked if I were to ever see my Social Security, which I will be eligible for in 5 years, Ha Ha Ha, the $150k the bankers have stolen from me since I was 18 will be worth one loaf of bread by the time I am eligible for any SS benefits.

We are finished, done, no mas...

Even my neocon brother called me today and said he thinks there will be a revolution in the US this year! He said everyone he knows is so pissed off at the govt they are ready to hit the streets...

My $150K the SS admin has of mine according to my statement would have bought me lots of gold, instead, I will probably get lead....

  8. 826 you are an ahole, I am self employed for the last 25 years so you are wrong about the job and lazyness, no recovery here, just more bs from you, the resident moron, business down, foreclosures up, homelessness up, unemployment up, banks that rob everything, well their business is up because of them making everyone else poor, war profits up, war dead up, no recovery, but the biggest depression is starting and will last for a very long time. I have been in the malls, shopping bags now are down to one item, used to be full of stuff. went shopping at costco, shopping carts used to be full to the top, now 90% have just a few items, I was looking at the carts and the average number of items was like 5, two years ago it was more like 20. You are definately on crack or some other drug, my brother is like you, blind and cant see beyond the nose on his face.

  9. Wohhhh 8:35 which part of USA are you from? are you talking about malls in Nigeria???? I am in Calif and here things are going back to "Normal" Malls are full and people are shopping like crazy. It would seem everyone here has had enough of the Financial Crisis and Collapse and are moving on with their lives and I suggest you do the same. You are on the edge of a moral breakdown man, just move away from where you are.

  10. Some say it was the Dubya /cheney /gates monarchy to blame with trillions wasted on wars set up by Clinton in repeating the war set up by the Bush 1 monarchy. Others say it is now the Obama/Clinton /Gates monarchy to blame and trying to cut benefits to the little lower ranks of the all volunteers .Is it really the economy stupid and the bankers and this and that presidents to be blamed?
Or the militarist system itself? The system of deconstructing and de- industrialising productive america for the profits of the few is going full steam ahead. Now never in the history of the world have so many consumers owed so much to so few and have such little real industrial productive work or value left to pay the the few. Only bombs and warplane factories to destroy and waste value are left now .
No money left in the kitty after paying off the bankrupt militarists on Wall St an the little property renting mortgage pigs on Main st. ?
Well stop whingeing unpatriotically it’s the e great american system . Somebody has to bail out the profit system the amerikans kill for. Freedom and the human right to hot dogs , freedom fries ,and cheap gas. But, the world especially the poor third world is tired of providing the US cheap credit and supplying cheap goods ,as in in recent years in exchange for what the Iranian president calls Twenty Nine trillions of counterfeit dollar paper . This is Jihad against faith in the very U.S. dollar marked “In Go we Trust!" He must be a Muslim raghead agent of the devil. Of course that crazy Iranian president believes all sorts of fantasies including 9/11 conspiracies theories too he is a well known unscientific professional denier. Unlike the sane American presidents Bush and Obama and loyal Americans who sanely believe everything they are told .about Iraq Afghanistan and Iran and Israel and the value of printed US paper to boot.
But, now even the volunteers are finding out that using the house as an ATM no longer works an even their promised medical care is in doubt. Sounds like what happened in the USSR when government defaulted on issued bonds and pensions lost their value in an economic debt implosion in order to to pay off the foreign creditors and USSR war veterans pensioners turned into garbage pickers. This
could not haqppen in america now that the shopping malls are full of happy little shoppers again!

  11. 850 whoa are you a nigga? or just blind? I am from california and people are broke, you are a disinfo agent and not too smart, california is about to declare chapter 9 bankruptcy, cali cannot even pay for their state employees anymore, soon there will be anarchy in the streets in cali, or an earthquake and then total collapse, you are on drugs for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 9:13 You are the one on Drugs, whatever you said was supposed to happen two year ago and Calif is still here standing strong. Your Chapter 9 comment should get the Oscar for the most stupid comment on the net as States are not allowed to apply for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection.

  13. Disinfo agents. How incredibly audacious.
    This current administration is bizarre.

They are doing nothing but helping the bankers and wall street rob everything from the people
and they honestly think the people are going
to sleep through this entire thing.

I think that by the end of this year we will
see some serious sh** go down in this country
between angry citizens and our 'government'.

    ReplyDelete
  14. all bush did was help the bankers rob us and helped the military industrial complex to rob us and oil rich countries, by borrowing money to fight these fake wars on money we can never pay back, you are on crack and did no complaining for 8 years of the most corrupt govt in the history of the world

    ReplyDelete
  15. @9:36 are you the same person that said the same thing last year that mid 2009 to end 2009 "serious sh** go down". If you don't suffer from amnesia like many does here you would probably remember the following article posted by EA in January:

The Next Economic Perfect Storm - Should Start Mid February.

Look for it in the archive. Did anything happen? Keep it up dude you may keep postponing for another 20 years but unlike you moron I have a good memory.

  19. See the post above on schools closing down in
kansas city where everything is up the date
but, as the confidence shrill on cali says above just like Dorothy in the wizard of Oz
"this sure doesnt look like kansas Toto " or somethiing like that
    Our shrill assures us
.The terminator wizard is in full control behind the curtain in Cali and "Recovery" is on the way in the shopping malls and dont bother about unemployment or underemployment numbers
as the food stamps are boosting state revenue receits just fine.
The wizard has revenue figures to prove it.
The revenues have obviously also increased because of the huge increase in housing values and the resulting huge increase in property tax revenues.

  22. If you no longer have to pay for a 3500.00 a month mortgage because you abandoned your home and then you file bankruptcy and then you move into a small 1800.00 a month apartment in one of your infested California cities well then I suppose you would have a little extra money for the mall. Now that is a run-on sentence, but it was for a good cause.

  23. So it seems the Christmas tax revenue posted on California's books. Yay credit cards.

Please do not rape or hurt anyone. And leave the children alone please. I hope you can be caught and jailed before you act out on your sexual aggression.
