Shoppers Leaving Items in the Aisles as we search for better deals

NEW YORK (AP) -- Penny-pinching Americans are getting cold feet at the checkout -- thinking twice about spending and ditching items before they're rung up.

They're leaving sweaters in the dress department, dumping cookies near the grocery cashier and waiting until the last minute to weigh wants versus needs. Online, shoppers are abandoning their virtual carts as they search for better deals.

People "want to be in the act of shopping, but they don't want to be in the act of buying," said Joel Bines, a director at AlixPartners, a turnaround consultant.

It means more lost sales for stores at a time when there are already fewer customers because of the recession. For bricks-and-mortar shops already working with fewer staff, it also means more work because orphaned items have to be restocked.

Hard numbers are difficult to come by, but Burt P. Flickinger III, a retail consultant, estimates that in 25 percent of shoppers' trips to the store, they're ditching at least one item. In the recession of the early 1990s, it was 15 to 20 percent. In good times, it's more like 10 percent.

Ashley Nichols Guttuso of Midlothian, Va., dumped a red cardigan last week at the counter at the local Limited store after she found out she couldn't use a $15 store coupon on the $15 sweater.

Guttuso says she could have afforded it, but she has focused on necessities since losing her job as a copywriter for Circuit City in January, as the chain was preparing to go out of business.

  1. This is just the beginning. As the propaganda local and Main stream news medias continue to lie to the sheeple about the economy, some sheeple are actually waking up.

The "act" of shopping is key in this article, the dumb downed sheeple in the US love to shop, and they can continue to shop, just not buy anything.

I am seeing more and more stores with no one in them, and I live in an area where the economy is supposedly still good, at least that is what the sheeple are told to believe. Though you can read daily about the record number of foreclosures in the area, both residential and business. Retail foreclosures went up from 10 last year to over 160 this year (& that was in July before I canceled my subscription to this worthless local propaganda newspaper owned by the Dallas Morning News).

There is a brand new Walgreen's that opened about a month ago, and there is NO ONE ever there, maybe one or two shoppers is the most I have ever seen. I have spoken to a manager there as well as some of the employees, and they are totally freaked out, as they were expecting a really busy store. One employee ask me "Why are there no customers?" Guess Walgreen's marketing missed the mark on this location, or they watched too much local or main stream news media propaganda.

    The beginning of the end....

Stock up on everything..its very likely when the SHTF, there will be no electricity or utilities..
You will need lots of storable food and water, and lots and lots of ammo...

    Pray to God for help!

  3. No kidding. People get so far with their knowledge but then still cling on to that scripted crutch. Then gain extraordinary knowledge but then still cling to the sun son savior. Watch the Zeitgeist movie and wake up. Letting go of myths is very hard but well worth it in the end.

8:06 - your other comments are dead on.

  4. bushhelpscorporationsdestroyamerica: I understand what you are saying. I do beleive there is a God, in some form or another. This is one of the challenges in my life right now. The Christian fundys and the EXTREME hypocrisy of these people make me sick. Bush is a great example, "I am a Christian" and he condones the killing of millions of innocent women & children in Iraq, Afghanistan, USA (?) etc.. I do not want to have anything to do with this group, they are Nazi's as far as I am concerned. Then again, Prescott Bush did fund the Hitler in World War II.

I fully respect your views. We are "awake" or "truth seekers" or whatever one wants to label us, we must stand together and NOT divide. We are the one's who may survive the forthcoming hell.

Let's stand together and get the word out! And respect each person's views!

  5. Tolerate yes. But respect myth and deception, no.

    All for working together.

Organized Christianity is not Christianity at all. The Bible says we are to look at the works people do to see what spirit they are. The Bible also says many will come in the name of Jesus to deceive many. Satan can turn into an angel of light so we shouldn't be surprised when his children do the same thing.

Anyone who is worldly or loves the world is not a Christian. In the Bible it is made quite clear that Christians are people that are not accepted by the world and as such the Christian will be shunned by, and hated by the world. The Christian is also a non-conformist. Conformity is wide-spread in Amerika but make no mistake, you cannot conform to the world and still serve Christ Jesus. You can choose one or the other, there is no other option.

Look at Jesus, Peter, Paul, John and other Biblical examples of how a Christian should be. If a person doesn't match the Biblical examples we have been give, the person is not a Christian or is in grave error in their walk.

I highly recommend anything by A.W. Tozer and Richard Wurmbrand. Both excellent spiritual Christians the world never accepted. They were non-conformists and such were hated. Some more in-dept reading would be Thomas A Kempis, St Augustine and St Francis.

Those authors should be more than sufficient to help you find what you are looking for.

  8. Blah! (If there is a) creator of the universes he couldn't give a shit about being worshiped. Worship is desired by an egotistical dirtbag, not a 'god'. www.evilbible.com

The god of the bible is a angry, selfish, racist, hateful, murdering dick and a total myth. Get over it. Same with all the other BS worldly religions. Total ignorance. Nothing but astrotheology.

  9. God is love.

If you substitute anyone else for Love, or anything else for Love, you will fail to understand God.

God does not wish to be worshipped, he wishes to be loved as he loves.

    Love is a chain...

    Life is a chain...

  10. LOL - he doesn't wish to be worshipped? I must have read that wrong in the bible then! He is a fraud and a fake. "He" as in any god as portrayed by a religion that is ...

God is love, that is a good one. That is why without god there could be no reason for death, war, and misery in this world.

Ya know people have been predicting the end of the world every since I can remember, I never really give it all that much thought, but this time ! it sure is shaping up to something big, i just don't know what !
its funny isn't it, I mean everyone pretty much knows and accepts that their life will end someday, but the prospect of "ALL" life ending, even though we'll be freaking DEAD anyways, is SCARY AS HELL, ISN'T IT !
I wonder what the next batch a monkies is going to look and act like ?
it couldn't possibly be any worse than the present evils man inflicks upon hiself...
