Rising Unemployment Makes Way for Lower Rent

Apartment vacancies hit their highest point since 1986, surging in cities from Raleigh, N.C., to Tacoma, Wash., as rising unemployment continued to chip away at demand during the traditionally strong summer rental months.

The U.S. vacancy rate reached 7.8%, a 23-year high, according to Reis Inc., a New York real-estate research firm that tracks vacancies and rents in the top 79 U.S. markets. The rate is expected to climb further in the fall and winter, when rental demand is weaker, pushing vacancies to the highest levels since Reis began its count in 1980.
Meanwhile, the air leaving the market is driving rents down, most sharply in markets that had been chugging along until a year ago, when unemployment accelerated, including Tacoma; San Jose, Calif.; and Orange County, Calif.

In New York, Jennifer Hyman rented a one-bedroom apartment in July at a monthly rate of $1,950 -- down from $2,450 for the previous tenant -- when she returned to the city after graduating from Harvard Business School. Her first month's rent was free -- and her landlord painted the apartment, scrubbed the floors and added window coverings

  5. 4:56 the funny thing is I am a right wing jesus freak moron. But I'm also a Patriotic American that understands that a country of poverty is not a good thing. Everyone in a modern society should be able to leave a fairly decent existence. If they can't, it's because of bad management. We live in a Republic, not a democracy. A democracy means 'mob rule'. Mob rule is never a good thing, but I think it may very well become a very good thing when the madding crowds realize to what extent their commanders in chief have disregarded their basic needs and allotted them a spot in a prison camp.

Then we shall see 'Democracy' in action!

  10. Whoa! Let's cool down people. Lets look at this from the big picture.

First, if we didn't borrow money and then give it to foreign countries we would be better off. Our situation is much greater then any grifters in the inner city getting food stamps and HUD housing.

So yes I fully agree there are ALOT of lazy bums in America but if we focused on American's and America we could easily provide for even the grifters in this country. I didn't say this is what I would "want" but rather we "could" have done it if we didn't go around spreading "so-called" democracy around the world.

Our country should have been priority #1.

We have sold ALL of our industry to China, debased our dollar, and spent beyond our means.

As a side note if we don't continue to shell out money to the grifters you can magnify the above situation 10 fold and it will come to a city near you. Does this mean I agree with supporting lazy slobs? NO! It's just that we are beyond that point and now have no other choice.

All you need to cull the savages is a littler beer money, food stamps, and HUD housing. Sad but true. God help us.

    Our nation is finished.
