Sobbering Job Loss

Here's a pretty depressing picture, courtesy of the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

This means that, as of November, 19.4% of American men in their prime working years didn't have jobs. By this measure, the current job situation (for men, at least) is much, much worse than in any downturn since the BLS started measuring this stuff in 1948. Either that or there are just a lot more stay-at-home dads, grad students, and men who voluntarily spend their days playing golf or pinochle. But I think it's mostly the former.

  2. I'm female and unemployed. So is my husband. I think at this point you're going to start seeing more couples like myself who are BOTH out of work.

  3. Looking into mirror. Americans will sink into the Greater Depression II just like they did in the 1930s. Unlikely to be armed revolts. There are too many Americans for armed revolts. In history, only small groups massed to take up arms for revolt: Blacks during the 60s, North and South during the Civil War, and colonials during the revolution.

  4. I am an educated God fearing patriotic American who is out of work. I can not believe that these bankers get bailed out while people like me get nothing. I am so fucking outraged. I can not believe this is happening.

I have been out of work for three years now. I graduated in May 2007. The only job I found was working at Dominos pizza. And that is what I do. I make pizzas for a living and deliver it sometimes too.

I guess that is what a degree in Finance gets these days. NEVER in my wildest dreams did I think I would be out of work for this long. For every job opening, they are getting like 25 to 80 resumes. WTF!!!! And then I am competing against people from better schools and of course people who have a lot more experience.

My girlfriend wants a baby. But I can not afford one on a Dominos pizza salary. My girlfriend graduated with a degree in Business Administration and she is a manager at Family Dollar making about $14.50 per hour. Even that is not enough to make it.

In the meantime, the banks, bankers, Goldman Sahchs, etc... all get bailed out. FROM OUR MONEY.

  5. Everyone seems to expect a sudden collapse, its more likely though to be a long slow decline. This will probably take ayear or two to play out.

  6. I really pity the degreed, university grads (except the MD's) that can't find work in their field.

Most of what I have worked for all my life is gone. I never had much anyway.

My son is 11 and all I can reasonably expect is for him to join the military in 7 more years. I have no desire to see him get killed for nothing. Even if he had a desire to be an MD, I could never get him to Med School.

As for the 2012'ers, the world will not explode on Dec. 21, 2012. We are told that life as we know it will change drastically. I believe we started this journey way back when Indy Mac was the first bank to fail. I predict that we will return to a time when we respect our planet and each other, no more lok out for #1. Until then, a lot of blood will be shed. Every armed American generally has more than one gun and when the time comes, the'll be happy to share them with those they can trust.

The banksters are not gangsters and they no not how to fight.

  10. 2:42,

a baby is the least of your problems. make your girlfriend understand as much, adding that you prefer marriage first anyway, whenever you can afford the presumption of her taking your name. no need to rush into more debt.

as for work, now that you know the trick, why not start making your own pizzas at home (do the math, and figure what you need to make to get it rolling, mister finance; defer student loan repayments, etc.), undercutting dominoes' prices (making your own dough and sauce, turkey-roni slices -- put girlfriend's BA to work), and attracting a lot of your regulars to give you a shot. being the god-fearing, patriotic american that you are i guarantee plenty customers will eat that up.

honest work, i believe, gets its initiative when the golden goose has soured everyone.

  11. I am the poster from 2:42 PM. Well my girlfriend just told me that they had one position open working part time only. She received 44 applications. Think about that for a minute- 44 applications for a part time job at a freaking dollar store!

  12. 3:39,

choose the navy, if you must. but i have no sympathy for those that choose the military for a way-out, and i know you can do better with 7 years ahead of you than to consign to a killing machine.

at his age, you guys could move to singapore (my plan) or somewhere in asia, and live modestly, teaching english, in the proximity of the great things to come this century.

i advise you to nurture an array of options, that lead you to optimism and action.

  21. 9:51 It's not like there are many choices anymore. If you need a hairdryer for example, it will only be made in China. You can't buy European made or American made. I wish you could, then you know it should last more than a month.

  22. All this continuously building pent up anger we keep hearing escalating more and more each day metaphorically reminds me of an immense pressure cooker. I sincerely hope there's a steam release valve somewhere on this one and it's functioning as it's supposed too.

Only problem with that is we won't know if it's functioning until it reaches the blow off point.
