Illinois School Groups: Education Layoffs May Top 20,000

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A coalition of Illinois education groups says more than 20,000 teachers and staff could be laid off in the next school year.
Schools must tell employees now whether their jobs will be cut next year.

The coalition says it has heard from three-quarters of Illinois school districts and they plan 17,000 layoffs.

The coalition says it expects the total to reach 20,000 when complete information is available.
Those layoffs could be canceled if schools get additional money. Education advocates want state officials to raise taxes.
The groups include the Association of School Administrators, the Illinois Federation of Teachers, the Illinois Education Association and more.

  1. Our small school district handed out 23,000 pinks last week...they're all going down.

  2. "Education advocates want state officials to raise taxes."
YEAH! - let's tax the hell out of taxpayers, so incompetent politicians, school boards and administrators can "LOOK" like they care for students and their education... and let's give the unionized teachers and classified more money, because higher paid positions attract such talented people.

I really do not want to over dramatize this with too much sarcasm... but as a former secondary ed. employee - the education system NEEDS a life lesson on economics and the incompetence of its admin/school boards. I feel for the students looking to educate themselves, but you know what - living life is the greatest teacher out there. Good luck

  4. All American children must be educated on how to print money out of thin air.

  7. There are better things to bitch about than the cost of education and where our tax money goes in wasteful fashion, such as financing stupid wars and the outlandish salaries for politicians that do nothing but steal more of our money. That said, the educational system, like the rest of the machine, needs to go anyway. So as the police officers get cut, the city and state budgets continue to slip, and this and that system begins to fall apart I will look on with glad eyes.

  9. Finally, some GOOD news!

In case you ain't figured it out yet, this country is or will be "HISTORY" within the next few years.

If you haven't figured that out yet, is it possible you attended public school in IL?

Say bye bye Americans! Live life to it's fullest, as time is very very short.

  10. As an IL resident, I live in a single story home, about average in our area and my yearly property taxes are just under 10K. The local schools get a good portion of that money. We do have effective schools, kids in our area eager to learn, but the problem now is the poor city near us is creeping in and bringing their "hate authority" attitude with them. It doesn't matter their district gets much more federal dollars then ours, they end up replacing buses and copper pipes because those kids/families tear their own schools up. Now they are heading our way screaming they too have the "right" to the type of education our kids are receiving--but they turn it upside down once they get here. Our school will be losing great teachers this year, the classes will be overcrowded with kids who don't want to be there, yet don't want anyone else to prosper from hard work. It's all going down hill and I know my taxes will be increased, but that's not going to make a better quality environment now. It's too late.

  11. Yet more proof that unions have been/are the downfall of many things that started out with good intention.
I DO NOT feel sorry for many of the teachers, what a load of crap

  12. 525 you pay nearly 10k a year in property taxes? That is insane. I pay $45 dollars a year in property taxes. I live out in the middle of no where. My child gets a good education where she goes to school. I would move if I were you.

  13. LOL- 633 well, if you live in the middle of nowhere, I'm glad to hear you aren't being taxed to death. We live in a family friendly town of 13K people. I didn't mind paying the taxes as long as it was worth it. That's no longer the case.
I grew up in AZ, in the middle of nowhere and hated it. Just wanting a hamburger meant driving 40 miles. My kids get to enjoy sports, close universities, a nearby hospital, and a good church down the street. Pretty soon, I'll probably have to enroll them in a private school since the public one is going down hill though. BUT, it's nice to have more then just a gas station, post office & bar and call it a town- like where I grew up.

  14. All that's needed is for the potential unemployed to take a pay cut.

    Class dismissed.

  15. 7:45, You are NUTS. Just keep blaming the past for the atrocities of the present. You will never see the truth. The schools are disintegrating due to wasteful overspending, and the left's education doctrines to "initiate" our kids. The kids are being destroyed, along with this great country. I am just grateful to have lived in America's golden time.

  16. 7:45, is that you Barry? Didn't your handlers tell you not to be blogging? Axlerod and Rahm will kick your ass if they see this nonsense.

Now be a good little boy and stick to the teleprompter's script. You know what an ass you are whenever you attempt to say something on your own.

  18. Overheard at a soccer game:
"If the school board cuts the Pre-Kindergarten classes, those kids are going to be criminals!"

  21. You should see the schools they build in the Houston area. Architectural wonders. The football stadiums are enormous with astroturf, huge score boards that have instant replay and on and on. In my area about a third drop out of school never to finish. It’s a joke and kids know it. They don’t even assign homework anymore.

  22. They usually fall in line with their parents regardless. Let them do online school. Porn and video games is more informative than HS though it should preferably be mixed in with learning.

  23. Everyone that is saying "good riddance" to cut backs for education needs to be quiet. Why don't we start cutting your jobs back too? You are making assumptions about all teachers because of a few bad eggs. I'm sure there are just as many people in every other profession who are just as bad if not worse. The pessimistic attitude of the people in the state about education is the reason students don't take it seriously
