Rite Aid On The Brink Of Bankruptcy?

Drugstore chain Rite Aid Corp. announced a worse-than-expected quarterly loss, and revised downward its 2010 profits, sending shares tumbling on Wednesday.

Rite Aid reported a $208.4 million loss—24 cent loss per share—for the last fiscal quarter, which ended on Feb. 27. The company attributed the loss to a mild winter and flu season, which dampened demand for over-the-counter medication. The Camp Hill, Pa.-based drugstore chain is the third largest in the nation.

“It was a difficult quarter with continued weak consumer demand, a weaker cough cold and flu season than last year, and continued pressure on pharmacy reimbursement,” said Rite Aid Chairman Mary Sammons in a statement.

The loss was the company’s 11th straight quarterly loss—since it acquired the Brooks Eckerd pharmacy chain in 2007. The number of prescriptions filled in stores dropped 1.7 percent last year, a major blow to earnings considering prescription sales accounted for two-thirds of the company’s total sales, according to the company.

  2. Rite aid is in my town (several) and no one shops there. Walgreens seems to be #1, then CVS. I heard they were filing bankruptcy a year ago. The parking lot is empty unlike the other ones. People are getting Rx's @ Target, W. Mart and smaller local discount pharmacies.

  3. Go to Rite Aid for a perscription and wait 2 hours or go to Target and wait 20 minutes.

  6. When I visited USA 3 times in 2009, I never saw a Rite Aid store, but remember CVS as if it were McDonalds. If it is expensive and offers poor service it deserves to go under. Good old fashioned market forces at work.

  8. Rite aid is going under because the ceo's like Mary Sammons are getting Huge ..Huge bonuses like millions while employees stop getting raises at $10.00 an hr. rite aid being a drug store and promoting health, they do not even have sick pay for employees and EXPECT them to come in sick. The managers do not care, the store is about them and employees better make them look good so THEY CAN GET the kudos! Yes, I quit , too many tasks, too many years, and not appreaciated. RITE AID, THE DRUG STORE THAT DOESN'T CARE

  12. Rite Aid does suck! Worked there for 2 yrs. and it is one of the stupidest companies around. All their managers are overworked losers and they run an almost no help atmosphere. Many times I have had people ask, "Is there anyone to check me out." Upper management has shit for brains and they are always coming up with a new game or gimmick to get people into the store. These gimmicks never work. As an employee you operate in an atmosphere of fear that the thought police will get you for saying something politically incorrect. Many good people have been fired for innocuous comments. A real shitty place to work. In fact the MOST SHITTY of all places to work.

    ReplyDelete
  13. If Rite Aid does not fail then NO company should every fail. One of the crappiest companies every. Way out of line on prices, selection and service.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Rite Aid doesn't give a shit about its employees. HR at Rite Aid stands for Herr Rich-minister. A real politically correct bunch of Nazis these people are. Make no mistake whether 1 yr. or 20,these bastards are not loyal to anyone and they do not appreciate anyone. Until they bite the dust do not be tempted--STAY AWAY!

  15. I am a store manager for Rite Aid and trust me, its bad. It's a company managed by corporate leaders with no integrity, no care for it's consumers, and no care for its employees. The slogan is "with us, its personal," it should be "with us, it's business...period." Their shady tactics and cost cutting measures have spilled into the lives of it's employees and it's consumers, leaving ALL who enter it's outdated facade disappointed. Two thumbs down as an employer and as a place to shop. The Rite Aid ship will sink and I hope nobody offers swimming lessons to the business major dropouts in Camphill.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well said,no one knows how bad it is until they have managed on of these shitty little stores. Millions of things to do to right the sinking ship and not enough buckets or people to carry them. When they do go under, i will be glad just for the sake of all the future workers that were spared. If I was working for them now, I would bail out before the stern goes under. And when Rite Aid finally sinks into the darkened depths I will look into the whirlpool as she disappears and hardily say "Fuck YOU MATEE" Harrr! and Good Riddance Harrr!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Rite Aid only exist because of anti-trust laws. They should have been gone years ago. When CVS wanted to buy then the fed would not let them, sighting unfair competition in markets where both chains operated. When they bought Eckerd, who, buy the way, had some long time excellent help, they payed too much and have been ass deep in dept since. They lost a lot of loyal Eckerd customers and employees when they took them over because they are about the most uncaring bunch you would ever want to work for. Now they are like a drowning man thrashing about grabbing on to a small piece of wood here (on of their gimmicks ie.transfer coupons,15 min rx etc.) or there and trying to keep their head above water. Of course they will not make it.Owing billions of dollars in a crap economy is something only the government with its printing presses can do. The people at the top will bail the hell out with some sort of cash parachute. The rest of the poor suckers will be screwed. I predict that before 2012 it will be taps for Wrong Aid.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No one ever shops the front of a Rite Aid store for anything except sale items. These are the only items you do not get screwed into paying too much for. Even then, the sales are a complete joke since they do not have a selection of desirable merchandise. No one that works there, including pharmacist, like the place. There is no loyalty. The only reason that most people in my area stay with these jokers is that they were long term Eckerd people, and that the recession has held them hostage in a very miserable place to work. You are always hearing rumors of a takeover or a new program, but it is really like being on the Titanic and even though people are getting the hell in the lifeboats, most of these people think everything is ok. It is very remarkable that they keep people since they treat them like cow squeeze and could care less. If you are remotely thinking of employment with this company I would urge you to rethink. The most that could happen in the next month or year, is that you have wasted time in a hell hole. The worst is that you've wasted time in a hell hole that suddenly goes out of business and leaves you without a pay check. Rite Aid is Wrong for you!

    ReplyDelete
  19. rite aids problem is they dont care about their employees all they care about is getting more profits if they stopped and took a look at how they treat people they might could come up with some better ideas of how to get sales istead of worring about how to sit on their ass and boss their underpaid cashiers around

  20. I WORKED IN THE RITE AID WAREHOUSE FOR 11 YEARS.USED TO WORK 16 HOURS IN A SHIFT.ALWAYS WONDERED IF I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE BY QUITING.FEEL BAD FOR MY OLD COWORKERS.BUT ALSO GLAD THE COMPANY IS GOING DOWN.THEY WERE (MANAGEMENT)ALWAYS UNCARING ABOUT YOU OR YOUR FAMILY.AND THE PHARMACIES KILL PEAPLE WITH THE WRONG MEDICATION!!!!!!!!!!

  21. I currently work for rite aid. I wouldn't recommended anyone to work there in a million years. The pay is terrible, other drugs stores down the street pay 10% more starting then crappy rite aid does. If I had another job i would quit right away. You can have a problem and call Human resources and they won't do anything for you but give you the run around and tell there secretaries to make up a lie such as they can't be reached because they are in a meeting etc.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well. I don't doubt rite aid suck. But cvs doesn't stay behind on how bad they treat us has employees. They make the store mngrs work almost two weeks without a day off. I've been with longs/cvs several years n ever since longs turn into cvs is been he'll. They don't give us enought $ to schedual any help throught out the week. They literly have us working like slave. They don't appreciate anything we do. Fuck cvs. I can't wait to get the f*** out of here. Every week is something new. Our dm is never happy with our work. Fuck all those "big" on corporate. I been so bad that we ha people that has been working for over 15 years snap n quite. N even have had store mngrs retire to not
put out with all thir bs. We even had our pharmacist mngr demote him self to just a pharmacist scare that he might get fired cause the company ask to much n is just impossible to accomplish with the little help of staff n budget cuts eveyy week on front store and pharmacist. We can't ask or a raise cause is like pulling a fucking hair o their balls. But don't let extreme make over submitt a new house remodel cause cvs will donate over $160,000 WTF

  23. Rite Aid needs bashing by someone who will tell the truth about them. They are not loyal to employees or pharmacist. They have crappy prices, and sales and they have a lot of malcontents working for them. They took a good chain like Eckerd and fucked it up. No one likes to work for them because they work the shit out of you for bad pay. They will fire you without letting you say one thing in your defense or trying to understand what went on. They empower employees to come forward with something against you without any consideration about you. You have to watch what you say at all times because a worker may rat on you and accused you falsely of something. He could lie about you and they would believe him against you. Just a real fucked up company to work for. A real bunch of politically correct Nazis.

  28. let me tell u about my experience with rite aid.
they sell the same drugs at a different prices!!! prices may vary from week to week and even if u buy morning or evening of the same day!!! and they don't tell how it could happen!
stupid stuff, don't care about customers, can give u somebody else's drug and then just say that people can make mistakes!!!
they should not have their license!!! it's illegal to do stuff like that!

  29. There will be a great cheer from all ex-wrong-aid employees when the damn company finally is boarded up.For all the wrong they have done to people it will be a most deserved payback. Mostly it will be satisfying because it will prove "What goes around does comes around." With so many people hoping and praying for there demise, results are bound to happen maybe sooner than later.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Poor suck-ass Rite Aid. Voted 2010 the most likely to go OUT of business. How much longer can they play their insane game? Highest prices in town, crappiest service, least original, oldest dirtiest stores, meanest bosses, stupidest games and promotions and most disgusted employees. It has to end sometimes for this bunch.I only hope when it does it is swift and hits them right between the eyes like a bolt of lightning!

  31. Well, how is it on the good ship Titanic all you Rite Aid lovers. The burg has been hit and the water is pouring in. The life boats are full because ole Mary and her bunch of rats are casting off. Now only night and the hope that the lights will stay on a little longer. Down deep inside you know that soon the great ship will shudder and go under leaving you in the cold. Like a turd in a toilet you will soon be gone!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Like the little boy with his finger in the dam, Rite Aid has only its little finger to hold back billions in debt. Each year trying to refinance an enormous debt load to buy a few more months. Slowly people catch on and exclaim "Rite Aid has the highest prices in town!" or "Rite Aid has to rely on gimmicks to get people in" or " I could not find a person to help me" Slowly but surely the stores loose customers and are almost vacant of shoppers. The mountain of debt finally crushes the life out of them --RIP Rite Aid!

  33. riteaid management is nothing but joke

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have worked for rite aid for going on 5 years in the pharmacy and yes I can say that their front end associates are not treated with much respect and as far as making money, if you can't sell liquor then the pharmacy is your money maker. If rite aid wants to stay afloat they need to revamp their front end and cut out half the sh** because it is too expensive and really worthless. As far as the pharmacy changing prices, not happening day to day, but year to year everyone does that, it's life. You are probably a "TAB" person lookin for the cheapest route possible besides state funded money that comes out of the store you are shopping at. If it wasnt for the 58% of people on medicaid maybe drug stores can be reimbursed for what they spend to pay for a drug. Example: Nexium for GERD is relatively expensive lets say $60 for a bottle. Medicaid covers it (well we do actually cause we work), u pay 50 cents and guess what reimbursement is $15 if that, so Rite aid loses 45 bucks and over time leads to rising front end prices to make up for who? The consumer

  35. There is this Rite Aid in San Jose , CA who hire a bunch of youngters as supervisors who are very unprofessional. Two of them are talking on the cell phone while on the floor. One supervisor is always checking her text messages. This black guy supervisor doesn't even want to cashier even if he sees a line. Duh and they say three in line is time to call for help?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Three in line to call for help? But where is the help when they do not have hours to even hire people that is why the managers cashier so what is up with this black dude supervisor who does not want to cashier. He will go down with the boat.

  44. I am a floor manager at the Rome,N.Y. D.C..It is a big game working for this company.I get notes from my boss on who will be next to go.Its all based on years of service. The more years, the more likely you will be terminated. And yes,I have to make stuff up or make it look like the associate is falsifying company documents.Ted,Rich Denny,Rich Hough can kiss my a$$ when this company goes under.I am sorry for what I've been told to do,but I have to feed my family.Do NOT apply at RA!!And yes,I do see the local 182 union tend to look the other way on a lot of cases. But hey, there always some young kid that "we" can work into the ground, then FIRE them.

    ReplyDelete
  45. so rite aid brough out this new policy, they will make their salary assistant manager hourly and the others, the high paid ones, fire them. this is kind of good becuase the assistants will get overtime, becuase rite aid makes managers work like 60 hours a week. i am a manager now, want to get out of this place. my manager sal, yells screams and cusrses all of us infornt of customers and other employees, i guess to show he is macho. our dm ryan moore, is just as rude, not giving people transfers, telling people to quit if they cant get the work done, tell us hr reps share the same office with them, so there is no use to complain to union. oh, ryan and sal used to work together as store managers in duane reade, ryan came to rite aid as lpm and fire the dm that brought him to rite aid, then, ryan took the dm position that became vacant, then ryan brough sal from duane reade to work as a store manager, now ryan is trying to make sal a lpm. see, this company is being run by people who are doing shit for themselves and not for the company's interest. because of people like this the company is going under. oh, my manager sal was involved in an inappropriate sexual comment towards a female pharmacist, some how, they manage to convince the pharmacist to transfer somewhere else away from sal so he could keep his job. i guess ryan was right, hr does share same office with him. nice company huh?

  46. I'm not sure what to say. I've been working for Rite Aid for several years now. I do admit the company started to go downhill months after the Eckerd buy out. 2010 has been nothing but a steady flow of hours cut, unhappy customers, and overstressed employees. I work in the pharmacy and I'm now doing the work of 2 full time staff and I just can't make everyone happy. It will be interesting when the immunization clinics go into effect this year. I can't see how it can be done if employee hours are constantly getting cut. Heads up all Rite Aid employees!

  47. I work at the Rome, D.C.,and it sucks.I keep quiet.I am not really for the Union or RA.I see allot of grimey stuff going on,meaning on the way the management staff treats people. You just have to be in the "click" to survive here.I'm young, and I won't be here forever,so I will just play along with their game.I just feel really bad for the older people that have allot of years here. They are going to be without a job.Oh well.Rite Aid sucks, working for them and shopping in their stores,SUCK.

  49. I've worked in the back office which was an old Giant grocery store, the temperature was 86 degrees. Now Rite Aid is to cheap to hire someone who knows to fix the hvac problem, the maintenence department are retards, We are making outbound calls to customers and with all of us talking it gets down right hot. Our managers expect us to take crap from ferocious old farts and smart asses who enjoy harrassing you, funny thing is we are not allowed to hang up on them even when they have called you a fucking retard. It's sad because in the past few months. nearly every new hire has quit. We take between 150-175 calls per day, the scripts we read are dumb, I never saw a company to let a non salaried employee run the show, yea and her cousin is a Manager and will pull any strings to move her up the ladder.Bottom line I can't wait to get out of this dysfunctional company. We were recently told we must keep up the morale, I was unaware our department had morale,

  51. I've been working for rite aid in New york for 2 years now. Never have i seen such a dysfunctional company like this! from the dm to the lpm and down to the store managers. Its all a circus. Rite aid DONT CARE about their employees, they're greedy and only care about their money. Hours are being cut drastically. New employees hours are being cut down to 8 hours a week therefore the old employees are being over worked and through it all we must maintain a sense of great customer service? What? How? On delivery days male employees have to go outside and work on a 40 foot truck taking each box and tote out one by one meanwhile we're suffering from heat exhaustion cause its 95 degrees out and they wont even give us a bottled water, we have to buy it from the little paycheck they give us. Its a total injustice!!!!! I can go on and on about this company...

  52. I was just recently laid of by right aid after working with the company 20 years 5 months and 26 days. At first, I was devastated, angry, scared, depressed. Then, it took me only few hours to realize that the whole situation was for my benefit. For the first time in a long while I felt so much peace in me, not because of what happened but because of the new opportunities that opened up for me to take. Now I can look up the future without limits, and my faith in Jesus Christ has never been stronger. Nevertheless, I thank Rite Aid for giving me a chance to serve the public. I count those years as blessings. To build new relationships with people is the most wonderful feeling. Now, less than 2 weeks after leaving the company, I am making more than before and I am able to spend time with my precious family. Therefore, I have only one thing to say, we should not harbor any grudge for in everything that happened there's always a reason.

  56. Well i been working for rite aid for 3 years know. I agree with most of the comments here. They dont know how to treat their employes, the head office sucks. They cut hours every other day, and i'm like how am i'm suppose to pay bills. I am full time, but only get 17 hours a week and they still trying to cut them. They want you to work in the photo lab, straighten the store, take out the trash, set sale signs, ring up customers, put up stock all at the same time for suck pay. all at the same time of promoting dumb shit and if you don't do it they write u up. Every monday we have people from the big office stand behind you and make sure you are signing ppl up for wellness card, that the customers dont like.
Far as prices ALL DRUG STORES ARE HIGH AS HELL. GO TO WALMART OR TARGET. RITE AID PRICES ARE CHEAPER THAN CVS AND WALGREENS REGULAR PRICE. HERE IN CHARLOTTE. MOST TIMES ALL DRUG STORES HAVE THE SAME SALES. I'M NOT DEFENDING THEM THE COMPANY DOES SUCK AS A WHOLE.

  67. I am a Pharmacist and worked for Brooks/Eckerd for 6yrs. with a Rite Aid across the street. When Rite Aid bought Eckerd I got moved to another store, worked there 1year and then got laid off. I had 2 1/2yrs to finish before I could retire and got screwed by Rite Aid. Due to my age I have not been able to find full time employment, I woked 40,50,60 hours per week, and went to different stores for Eckerd, I loved my job and fell I should have been able to retire at my selected time. I have great health, I have a farm as a hobby, I do my own chores, I can still work, and earn money, but for what chain? Independents are not hiring, so I never though I would work my entire life in Pharmacy and not finish it out in my time....I would think Obamacare has something to do with it....Time will tell, If had it to do over I would have been a school teacher, now they have the perks.

  68. I have just given my 2 weeks with RA. The one positive I will say is that the pharmacy prices are reasonable. Thats it.
    Management: half-assed.
    Prices: Over priced.
    Culture: A joke.
    Direction to staff: Always unclear.
Hours: Not considered / "zig zag".
Atmosphere: Dirty, out-dated and NO ventilation.
