Government Subsidized Training: Equals New Skills and No Job

In a massive makeover of the U.S. work force, hundreds of thousands of laid-off Americans are undergoing federally subsidized retraining designed to provide them with the skills and education to land new jobs.

For some, it already feels like an exercise in futility.

“I’ve tried and tried (to find work) and it’s discouraging,” said Jama Eisman, 49, of Elkhart, Ind., a laid-off recreational vehicle worker and single mom who has been looking for a job — any job — since she graduated from a six-month information technology program in early August. “... A lot of places they have signs on the doors saying they’re not even accepting applications.”

Eisman said she fears she will lose the home she shares with her three sons — D.J., an 18-year-old high school senior, Michael, 15, and Eric, 11 — when her unemployment benefits expire on Nov. 1, unless Congress passes another extension.

Former Forest River employee Jama Eisman took an IT course but has been unable to find work.
“My child support pays for my house payment, and I pay for everything else,” the divorced former factory worker said. “I won’t make it.”

Many thousands of laid-off workers have found work during the recession after being trained in new occupations. But thousands of others are finding it can be difficult to hit a moving target when jobs are still shifting and vanishing.

  1. IT workers are the most gullible. Employers say they want workers, and that they cannot find them, but they bring in foreign labor to take the jobs and don't give them to Americans. It is a sham.

careers in the programming field tend to be short-lived. According to a survey conducted by the National Science Foundation and the Census Bureau, six years after finishing college, 57 percent of computer science graduates are working as programmers; at 15 years the figure drops to 34 percent, and at 20 years -- when most are still only in their early 40's -- it is down to 19 percent.

  3. My friend's son is a grad student and now thankfully got a part time job in sales at Ikea. I think he sells kitchen furniture. There are wonderful jobs out there you just have to look hard for them.

Of course when you have $125k+ in student loan debt (that you can't file bankruptcy on) things are a little rough.

The banksters have really stacked the deck in the wage slave dept this time around.

  4. just because you have a college degree , your not entitled to anything, go out and find any temporary job, stop milking the tax payers.

UNEMPLOYMENT=LAZY ENTITLED AMERICANS WHO NEVER TRAVELED THE WORLD, AND DONT KNOW HOW GOOD THEY HAVE IT HERE.

  5. 4:13 I don't think you quite get it. It may be easy to find a job, but because of MASSIVE inflation created by the Gov't over the years, one would not be able live in a shack AND eat macaroni, with the meagre wages being paid today.

  6. 4:41 I understand but no one should be on unemployment unless they are disabled. If you are healthy you can find any job. work and SAVE, americans do not understand the concept of SAVING, thats their problem. We had 10 years of massive employment and growth, people were getting payed very well, and they didnt save, bottom line. Its a very unlikable quality for someone like myself who has to support everyone through my tax money.ugggghhhhh.

  7. Where there is a will there is a way. Sorry to say that Americans are just too lazy, all they know is borrow money then consume and borrow again and buy buy buy again and the rest of the world have to pay for them.

  8. 5:55 , agree. we wouldnt be in this situation if people just payed off their balances, saved and went to work. I worke saved, and have no debt. Now I have to worry for doing the right thing, while these reckless selfish greedy *** dont work and dont pay their bills and live off my tax money, and then complain that they have to pay their bills, like that detors revolt trailer woman. uggh, get a life.

  9. Stop spreading lies!

We would still be in this situation because the system is set up such that the govt can't print it's own money, and has to borrow it(!!!) at interest(!!!!!!) from private interests who own the Fed.

We wouldn't be in this situation if not for names like Rothschild, Rockefeller, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, the Committee of 300, the Bilderberg Group, the Club of Rome, the Trilateral Commission, the Council of Foreign Relations, and the Royal Institute of International Affairs.

Thus THE DEBT CAN NEVER BE PAID OFF. SYSTEMIC COLLAPSE IS NOT ONLY INEVITABLE, IT'S PLANNED TO BE THAT WAY. Stop blaming John Q Public for the actions of the banksters, it's shameful, and if you don't know about these vampires who have society deceived then get educated.

  11. 2:04,I see your point ,but I dont want to go there.. good always wins over bad. If "the people" commit to just working, living modestly, paying off bills, we can defeat the system, and become a moral society once again. The way you are thinking, is letting them think we need more stuff, we need more more loans more creit...we dont need them and we can win at their own game.

  12. 9:39, we cannot win by being frugal. So long as you require a roof over your head and food to eat, the monetary system will enslave you in the very way it is set up.

And no, there is no fairytale moral of "good will triumph", either. This is the real world, not a Hollywood script. Game theory suggests that in a society of cooperators, a few cheaters will make out like bandits at the expense of the majority. And that's exactly what's happened.

It will take a revolution to escape, and at this stage most people can't even detect who has their measure, or even that they've been enslaved by stealth at all. There is mindboggling death and strife to come if they're almost unbelievable purported objectives are any guide. No oligarchy in history has the technological capacity for destruction that they have.

Our only hope is that they overplay their hand.

  13. 12:21,reality bites, people have to pay the bills. If they cant get their "DREAM" job, suck it up and take anything, dont live off the taxpayers, is all I am saying. they can revolt on their days off, just get a job.

  14. Full employment isn't possible under the current system, 9:34, so change the system and the shadowy figures in charge. Where in the Tavistock manual is "blame the victim"?
