Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Verizon Communications Inc., coping with subscriber losses at its fixed-line phone business, plans to cut about 13,000 jobs at the division this year after posting fourth-quarter revenue that missed analysts’ estimates.
The cuts will follow reductions of a similar size last year, Chief Financial Officer John Killian said on a conference call today. This year’s eliminations equal to 11 percent of the staff at the unit, which had about 117,000 workers at year-end.

I am a telecom agent, sell nationwide, and I receive maybe 1 or 2 chances to quote voice and data a week ( I represent 30+ carriers). 2 years ago, I received 5-10 per day...
ReplyDeleteI am on the verge of breaking my lease and moving to a studio apt, as I can not longer pay all my bills. And there is 0 chance of finding any kind of work here in north TX.
I have a few risiduals still coming in..
I feel very bad for all the people who have lost their jobs in the past couple of years, and this month, i.e Sams. At least I can still eat...
And I have lots of stored food, and other supplies I have been collecting for the past 5+ years. I am sure 95+% of the laid off or employed sheep have nothing to their names.
Thanks God for sites like this one!
12:26pm-Good luck and thankfully you have a positive attitude...I do also wonder about how the sick and old will get by if things go sideways...Not overly religious but God help us all.
ReplyDeleteOn a positive note...This country does need a wake up and nothing wakes you up to the loss of freedoms and being used as cattle than being hungry or broke.
Sadly enough in times of needs is when people look around and rise and stop living stupid fantasies...Love the US but we have a whupping coming for being so short sighted and careless when we had it so good.
This mess seems to be long term but what is long term? 2 years or 5 years or even 10 years?

The Telecoms are raking in millions from the sheep and are in bed with big brother wiretaps.... so don't ask me to feel sorry for them if they go under! I don't!
ReplyDeleteMatter of fact, teacher says every time a Telecom falls an angel gets his wings! George Bailey was one smart cookie!
This is a good thing...
What most people do not realize is that lots of connections and interdependence between business in other words sooner or later YOU WILL BE AFFECTED at your job and in the taxes and other issues that will come around to bite all of us.
ReplyDeleteWe really need to learn how to look out for one another and help each other.
The bankers and government surely are NOT going to be of any help.
Americans do not need more gadgets: cell phones, cell phone contracts, iPods, Zunes. Americans need to learn sustainability. Education must include courses in gardening, farming, and at least one trade skill. Housing projects should have gardens nearby so that tenants have a means to grow their own food in addition to dependence on foodstamps. Plow up the asphalt then plow up a garden!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with 2:03!
ReplyDeleteThe sheep love their toys, for now, until they can no longer afford them...
You do understand this is POTS and not wireless of VOIP over cable? Copper phone lines are slowly going away. This is not a big surprise unless you just came out of a 10 year coma..
ReplyDelete5:03 is dilusional and has dementia, copper lines are not going away, ever.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to practical things, Americans should also be well-educated in a classical sense, like reading the classics and being trained in playing at least one musical instrument and learning at least one foreign language. It's time to be all around excellent human beings with self-worth and self-respect. Maybe we can all start a new Renaissance if everyone tries.

ReplyDeleteI work in the equipment side of the TeleCom industry.
We were down 25% from 2008 in 2009. So far we have got lucky ONLY because of a recent large contract. Without that large contract we would be down over last year.
We go month to month now waiting for big orders to come. Everyone is on workshare (Part time unemployment)
I take it week by week.
5:42 is uneducated slob living with his wife/sister in the Kentucky back country. How's that rotary phone working these days?
ReplyDeleteFiOS is the future for legacy Telcoms if they plan to stay in business.

ANON 5:03,
ReplyDeleteYou hit it right in the target. This is as much a technology decomm issue as anything.
Last week, Apple Store in the US was updated to include the new iPad, both the Wi-Fi only version, and Wi-Fi + 3G version for pre-orders. The Wi-Fi only model comes in 16GB
