Meat Price To Set Records This Summer

U.S. meat prices may rise to records this summer after farmers reduced hog and cattle herds to the smallest sizes in decades, the result of surging feed costs linked to demands for more ethanol.
Wholesale pork jumped as much as 25 percent this month to 90.68 cents a pound last week, the highest since August 2008, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show. Beef climbed 22 percent this year to $1.6896 a pound on April 23, the most expensive since July 2008. Chicken’s gain in March was the most in 20 months.
Demand for pork chops, steaks and chicken breasts is rising as the economy improves, backyard barbecues resume and China and Russia allow more U.S. imports. Domestic supplies may drop to a 13-year low because of culls to stem losses caused by corn prices that doubled after former President George W. Bush set targets to increase ethanol use.
“Ethanol-induced prices in meat are just now getting to the marketplace,” said Steve Meyer, the president of Paragon Economics, a meat industry consultant in Des Moines, Iowa. “Consumers are going to see the highest prices they’ve ever paid in meat and poultry because of the decisions made to make corn into ethanol.”

  8. "As the economy improves" ha ha ha, this article is totally BS. Prices will go up because of inflation and govt regulations, not because of demand.

The sheeple believe anything their tv's tell them or what they read in their propaganda newspapers or magazines.

Now go back to watching your sports show and SHUT-UP!

Did anyone else laugh at this as hard as I did? The economy's recovering. People are gleefully BBQing again, and Russia and China are buying the only thing we produce.....bombs. Gee, I wonder what's going to happen to the price of seafood considering the huge die-off we are about to experience.

  12. 10 billion barrels of oil.
That's what the reserve BP tapped is.
If the pipe breaks open the flow will be as much as 50,000 barrels a day.
there's 42 gallons to the barrel of oil.
The Governor of Louisiana said something about he's planning on a spill of 150,000 barrels.

Is anyone else noticing that they have no way to shut this thing off?

I read that basically the entire 10 billion gallons of oil in the reservoir will have to come out because they have no way of turning it off.

I get that 10 billion divided by 50 thousand is 200,000. It would take 200,000 days for all the oil to flow out at 50,000 barrels a day.

    That's 547.9 years.

Okay. Real world worst case scenario they get it stopped in 3 months because they drill a second well and plug the first one from the second.

That's 90 days of flow at 50,000 barrels a day would be 4.5 million barrels of oil.

The exxon valdex held 1.26 million barrels of oil of which only a fraction leaked out, about 100,000 barrels.

The flow is already much higher than 5000 gallons a day that they first said. The slick tripled in size in 2 days. The flow now could be as high as 20,000 barrels a day.

If the two choke points in the riser pipe break it'll go to 50,000 barrels a day.

  36. This article is so true.

On Friday I went to Sams Club to purchase some steaks to grill this weekend with some friends- I had to pay 32.00 for a pack of 4 strip steaks! I would have put them back but I had already promised steaks. That's the last time I do that. Next time I'll only promise hotdogs (which are going up too).

    ReplyDelete
  37. @7:19, in 2 years you may not even be able to afford hot dogs. In 2 years you may be grilling dogs or squirrels!

It's not just the meat prices.

It seem like forever I've paid less than a dollar a pound for Roma tomatoes, then Shazamm! $1.99 a pound. Beefsteak tomato is over 3 bucks a pound.

One pound boxes of pasta have always been $.99 or less, $.79 when on sale, now they are $1.99 and when on sale, $1.79

I can't remember what prime rib tastes like. It's been at least 10 years since I've had any and since I now see packs of prime rib at Sam's Club for $30-40 bucks, they stay on the shelf.

I too am teaching myself all about pressure canning. 12, quart size Mason jars are usually about $8.00. I bought a pressure cooker for $23.00. It has no pressure gage, but I can attach one for about $6.00. Meanwhile if the instruction is to "cook" the jars for 10 min, I just go for 20.

I'll grow as many veggies as I can all summer long and then switch to a winter crop. I live in the city. I'll build a vertical garden once I run out of space. Find a copy of "Square Foot Gardening" and read it, then read it again.

  39. @8:32

You are probably right. I wonder if hot dogs can be dried or canned???

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hot dogs are no good for you. Can fruits and veggies instead.

I've been making and canning my own jelly and jam for a while. It's time consuming but easier than you think.

If you still want to preserve meat, get a pressure canner. I bought one at the flea market for $15; it needs a gauge too, but I can order one from the manufacturer. You should see if the company that made yours is still around. And you can get tons of Mason jars for pennies at the yard sales. The glass jars are always good; just buy new lids.

  41. WANT TO EAT WELL FOR LESS MONEY
LEARN TO COOK FROM SCRATCH.LEARN TO EAT LEFT-OVERS.
BUY IN BULK WHEN THINGS ARE ON SALE. A 5$ CHICKEN WILL MAKE 4 MEALS FOR ONE PERSON. A 10$ POTROAST WITH VEGGIES COOKED IN A DUCH OVEN WILL LAST FOR 5 OR 6 MEALS. ALL THE ABOVE ARE MUCH CHEAPER THAN FAST OR PROCESSED FOOD (WHICH WILL KILL YA) AND TASTE A HELL OF A LOT BETTER. GET OFF YOUR BUTT-LEARN HOW TO SURVIVE
