They’ve been called McMansions, Starter Castles, Garage Mahals and Faux Chateaus but here’s the latest thing you can call them — History.
In the past few years, there have been an increasing number of references made to the “McMansion glut” and the “McMansion backlash,” as more towns pass ordinances against garishly large homes, which are generally over 3,000 square feet and built very close together.
What sets a McMansion apart from a regular mansion, according to Wikipedia, are a few characteristics: They’re tacky, they lack a definitive style and they have a “displeasingly jumbled appearance.”
Well, count 2010 as the year the last nail was hammered into the McCoffin: In its latest report on home-buying trends, real-estate site Trulia declares: “The McMansion Era Is Over.”
Just 9 percent of the people surveyed by Trulia said their ideal home size was over 3,200 square feet. Meanwhile, more than one-third said their ideal size was under 2,000 feet.
“That’s something that would’ve been unbelievable just a few years back,” said Pete Flint, CEO and co-founder of Trulia. “Americans are moving away from McMansions.”
There is nothing wrong with a well designed 1,000 square foot home. My home is about 1,000 square feet. The designer really messed up in many ways:
ReplyDelete- No place to store a vacuum cleaner
- No broom closet for the broom and mop
- No towel cabinets in the bathrooms
Small is a good thing.
Once again I have to say it's as if we are on this giant, swinging pendulum and we just cannot help ourselves - we know it's swinging, we know which direction it's swinging, we even know where it's going.
ReplyDeleteAnd still we ride it.
Go visit an original civil war "house" - you will be amazed.
People are always talking about going green and how 6 Billion people are too many yada yada yada
Well when you have idiots like the the Smiths in hometown USA building mcmansions on top of each other & 40 miles away there is a vast nothingness
What do you expect will happen?
The entire state of Montana has less people than the city of pittsburgh,pa.
I guess we just don't want to live by ourselves
Yuppie sheeple slaves LOVE their mcmansions. I have 2 who are loosing theirs right now as I type this, foreclosed on. I told them, no I begged them NOT to buy them several years ago, they ignored my advise and bought it anyway.
ReplyDeleteVisions of living in a mcmansion trump reality to the sheeple.
I often wondered how long this trend would last. I can't imagine spending that kind of money to have my house look like every other one on the street, and so close together you can shake hands with your neighbor through the window. I cant figure out why so many people want to be just like someone else. Well, my house may be smaller and older but I don't have to worry about it being foreclosed on. Everything I own is paid for simply by living within my means.
ReplyDeleteA AAA spokesman for the 'Future'. Probably should capitalize this concept because we are all in a slow burn right now, economically we are being burned out at the fastest rate in human history(many times the magnitude of the Last ‘Great‘ Depression). Unheard of rubbing out of ‘We The People’ is just plain obvious to anyone who is not glued to their TV letting their brain operate on “barely functioning” status. The question many of you ask yourself each day is, “Why isn’t anyone stepping up to the plate and pulling the plug on all this destruction”? There is mass TELEPATHY going on right now where everyone feels like something should be done, yet too lazy to make a minimal effort themselves. The Golden Rule of any downfall for an Amazing Civilization to fall down is, “that while Injustice Prevails and Good Men do nothing…it will engulf all that has been built.”
ReplyDeleteDo you think you are sheltered from the Storm? You’re NOT sheltered you may be in the quiet of the storm but when it moves it will destroy you with the same ferocity.
Of course 'Ron Paul 2010' is just one person, but some of you are such hardcore "Naysayers" its a wonder you get up off your lazy flouridated body bag and find time to naysay someone... well at least you tried to do something today...
If you cant find work...
Do the math, learn spanish(as 97% of all illegals only speack) and pretend your an illegal ALIEN in yhour own country!
"Illegal Alien- 7 bucks an hour. All off the books, of course. 1500x7= $10,000. Pops out anchor baby and/or enters into a marriage of convenience. Collects food stamps, welfare, and Medicaid.
A recent report concluded that in every state in the nation, welfare PAYS far MORE than a low-wage job. According to the report, "The value of the total package of benefits [received by AFDC recipients] relative to a job providing the same after-tax income ranges from a high of $36,400 in Hawaii to a low of $11,500 in Mississippi. In eight jurisdictions...welfare pays at least the equivalent of a $25,000 a year job. $10,000 + $25,000=
ILLEGAL ALIEN'S REAL INCOME = $35,000."
re-read this again if you didnt get it the first time.
Me and my buddies are from Oaxaca. I learned English in Catholic school. But all my buddies know is Spanish. To day there are 27 of us. Tomorrow maybe more, I think so, yes. We live in a mcmansion 3800 square feet mansion. I can't believe it, I am the 'owner'. They each give me 5-10 dollars a day rent and I pay everything. Most of the other howses are empty so no neighbor hassels so far. America is great. I may move into the one next door soon and own two. My mother and sister and her husband will run that one. I love being rich.
ReplyDeleteSeveral years ago, in the area my family lives, house went up like mushrooms overnight. I'm talking houses with 4500-8000 sq. ft of living space. Hummers/mercedes in the garages, jet ski's, swimming pools, manicured yards and gardens, trips over seas, vacations to the "islands", eating out at the most expensive restuarants.
ReplyDeleteWell, it is now coming home to all of them.
Several of these folks are in bankruptcy, some are divorcing, some just gave up and ran away.
This represents a poor prospect for our economy and future. Unless we get our morals, work ethic and priorities straight, we are most definately doomed!
6:59 well said. although you did leave out one important aspect, in order for us to get this economy rolling again, we need to get these lazy ass minions off of welfare, unemployment and SSI.
