Didn't Pay $75 (Extortion) Fee, Fireman Watch House Burn To Ground

The event was dubbed "pay for spray" by MSNBC host Keith Olbermann. It's a chilling vision of what could play out in a third world America, where paying taxes isn't enough to cover basic services. Fire protection, it turns out, is a privilege in some communities. On Monday's show, Olbermann railed against the larger implications the incident, calling it "a look now into the America envisioned by the tea party ... just a preview of what would come in a kind of a la carte government."

  1. Olberman is spreads more crap than anyone else in media. He has no concept of personal responsibility. Should we pay his insurance premiums as well? The city is being demonized by Olberman for offering a service this poor fella did not pay for. he doesn't live in the city Keith. It makes sense in your communist world, I know...
Yea Keith, you are real entertainer. Can I advertise on your cutting edge program? Not!

  2. 2:13 mindless post. I don't care who is reporting this. The county, cities, towns and states extort fees from the public on a daily basis. You're so used to pay extortion fees that you don't know any better. Bankers don't have to pay extortion fees. Only the PUBLIC has to pay! Dumb numbskull poster.

  3. Would it have been insensitive for the firemen to toast marshmallows over the fire?

  4. Property taxes pay for neighboring towns fire departments?

  5. It was a rural community not a neighboring town. I knew someone that was a volunteer fireman in a rural area. Communities are supposed to support one another. If there is a fire and you have all the resources to take care of it, why let it burn simply over a missed fee, particularly when the man said he would pay whatever was necessary to come out. This comes down to the fact that money rules all, even the lives of individuals and their animals. For some idiots, I guess something as simple as cooperation or care is regarded as evil communism. Is this how towns and communities were originally built? No, and that is part of why they are falling apart.

  6. Some of these cowards would stand-by as a woman got raped and not offer any help unless she paid in cash or credit card. No checks, bitch! I got an honest business to run.

  7. the guy who's house burnt down is far better off now. if he had insurance and is able to collect. no 25+ year worth of mortgage on a house that probably isn't worth what the note is for. yea he lost some personal items, but now he can start anew! in what country, I do not know.

  8. With the collapse of the Great Ponzi and the coup in Treasury by the financial Mafia to gain contol of future government revenues for bailouts for capital America begins its descent into barbarism.

    The financial Mafia rules O.K.
    "Protection" rackets are expanding.

"The first Roman fire brigade was a group of slaves who were hired by an aedile Marcus Egnatius Rufus. Marcus Licinius Crassus made a fortune buying up properties near ongoing blazes on the cheap and then having his brigades extinguish the fires."

  9. With the first fire insurance policiesin England if you bought coverage they gave you a medallion to put on your house. If it caught fire the fire department would rush out. If you didn't have 'their' medallion they would let your house burn. Seems nothing has changed over the past 300 years. Couldn't they have put the fire out and then charged him the $75.00. I just couldn't stand by and watch someone's house burn Especially in a rural area where I would thnk everyone would know everyone else. Putting out the neighbours fire was just adding insult to injury.

  10. Wikipedia has its class bias too.

Note how in the extract above the slaves are not owned but "hired".

Professional Firemen in america are hired and have pensions and equipment that are paid for out of taxes.

  11. seems well known there your prop taxes do not pay for fire protection(although equipment-good call) and that is an extra payout..unincorporated area?...still they should have put it out, help your fellow american...those day's gone-maybe because if a fireman got hurt helping, no insurance coverage for injury due to lawyers working the system, also get fired for breaking a policy, and just don't care..all intwined legality of things and lack of caring anymore...ruined country. Policy in place, how's it tied to tea-party? Or is it MSM feels a sense of loss of control these coming elections. Has been interesting watching the true colors come out now as to what has happened to USA over last 50yrs especially, and the...state of man...right out in the open for all to see.

  12. Is that all one needs to do to claim a total loss by insurance company. Sounds great for the ones who owe more than the note. Dont pay a small fee, get a big check from the insurance company..cool.

  15. I had an firetruck come to my hose a few years back because I called in for a sickness. After they sent a letter, a fine of 500 dollars ('fee')... I didn't pay it and after they sent another one saying they would not come to my house in an emergency.

Want to know what it's really about? They can't afford it so they are trying to rob people of money. But lets not lose the firefighters! Right...

  16. Here are some facts: 1. That rural community NEVER had fire protection before the $75.00 tax. EVERY house burned!!! 2. The $75.00 is to make sure the fireman show up. 3. As soon as you put out a fire for someone who does not pay, NO ONE will pay. Get it!!! 4. America wants everything for free.

Not every rural county is under the same tax code as a city; if the residents want to be protected from fire, include it in their property taxes!

  17. anonymous 1:39 am good post, most here are to stupid to understand the concept tho. Your home insurance is the same way you can't call after the storm and upgrade your policy either to cover a event that has allready happened. Had this guy FORGOT to pay the last few years also. No one would pay the fee is you could just PAY it AFTER the fact. This is the product of the no taxes extreem right. No one wants to PAY for anything. Well this is what you get.

Sad but true. We live in a world that is ruled by the dollar. Forget right or wrong.

The way things are going those firemen may not get the help they need when they dial 911 in the near future. It may be their family and home that goes up in flames.

What comes around goes around on this ship of fools we call America.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Now someone explain why churches get fire & police protection all over the country & pay nothing? Why am I forced to subsidize that?

    ReplyDelete
  20. To everybody who thinks it was okay to let the house--and the pets--burn because the guy didn't pay a $75 fee: What if his elderly disabled mother was in the house? Should they leave her to burn to death too?

You morons talk about responsibility without thinking anything through. We play plenty of taxes to the government, which is supposed to protect its citizens. Not letting the fucking town burn down is one protection we expect (along with the police). It wasn't until the house next door caught fire (and they had already paid the fee) that the fireman finally did something. But the second house was damaged--so what did that fee accomplish for that family?

Sometimes I think America is so full of selfish idiots that we deserve every fucking thing turning us into a third-world country. I can't wait until your strapped local government puts a huge fee on everything from drinking water to parking on your own lawn--and you can't come up with the money. I can't wait to see what you have to say then.

  21. I forgot to add that someone did the math and discovered that if 13 cents was added to every property tax bill, the town/county could have funded the entire fire department. But then you fools would scream about higher taxes but somehow an extra $75 is okay?

  22. For as in the know as these suckers believe themselves to be, they sure are brain-washed by the ideologies of their government. You think you arent? Think again. You were taught at an early age along with crawling to be a good money system slave.

  23. Guilty on a moral groundOctober 6, 2010 at 8:40 PM

This is a crime the way I see it.. If they did not put the fire out that is as bad as starting the fire. This guy should sue the town it is the fireman's moral responsibility to put out fires regardless. The town who made this rule should be made to pay this man a large settlement. When people pay taxes that money should be used to pay for services the locality needs and fireman are part of this. Many towns have volunteer fireman who help people put out fires that is because they have the right perspective on what it means to be a fireman. If they can do it so should these so called firemen that stood there and watched disaster. They are guilty and I believe they would be held accountable in the court of law. I say go for it. Make them pay, the town & the fireman. Then the fat old ladies that made up that $75 rule will think twice before they get all bureaucratic. If they cannot manage the tax money better than that then they should be truly penalized in a serious way.

    Sharon you are right!

  25. Sharonj: Nobody said it was okay for the house to burn. This is America, you can pay for protection or not. YOU TAKE YOUR CHANCES!!! I'm sure if there were people and pets they would've gone in. My brother's a fireman and he would NEVER let anyone die. He would absolutely risk his life to save yours or anyone else for that matter. I can spend $75.00 on cigarettes and beer, but heaven forbid I pay to have my home protected. Are you kidding me? Grow-up!!! That's personal responsibility!!!

  26. Guilty on a moral groundOctober 7, 2010 at 9:40 AM

6:15pm You are wrong it's the towns responsibility to make sure it's residents are safe. The tax money is to be used for the protection and well being of the citizens. Making people pay for protection beyond taxes is I believe is unconstitutional. Otherwise what is the purpose of a mayor? Do you have to pay the Police for protection? No why is that? Because your tax money goes to this. Otherwise what would life become if we had to pay for protection it would be like being ruled by the mafia. That is what that town did with the fire department. That is wrong. When someone has the means and power to do something and they do not do it that is a sin. Those people in charge in that town committed a serious crime and should pay for it. They should not be paid for anything other than tax money.

You talk about personal responsibility.. Paying taxes is the responsibility of the citizens when they have done that then it is the responsibility of the town to handle it's responsibilities. They have failed to do theirs. I don't care what you say you are wrong. You're the type that will help enable government to take away what we are entitled to just to sound good. That is just plain stupid.

  27. 6:40pm Before the 75.00 fee. EVERYTHING burned, what don't you people understand. Whether or not taxes, people, the mayor, whomever you blame this was the setup. Right or wrong.

Unconstitutional? If I don't have homeowner's insurance and my house burns down, I suppose that's unconstitutional and I should sue the insurance company because I didn't buy it. Are you kidding me???

Unconstitutional? Try not paying your property taxes and your home will be SEIZED. How fair is that. Please American's have become big fat lazy crybabies. Fix me, help me, give it to me, it's mine. Pleeeeeeze!!!

  28. SOUTH FULTON, Tenn. — A Tennessee woman said Wednesday she doesn't blame the firefighters who watched while her house burned to the ground after her family failed to pay a $75 annual protection fee.

Paulette Cranick said the firefighters who came to the scene were just following orders. Her family had paid the fee in the past but simply forgot it recently. Cranick, 67, said she's just thankful no one was hurt in the fire last week that destroyed the doublewide trailer in rural northwest Tennessee.

"You can't blame them if they have to do what the boss says to do," Cranick told The Associated Press. "I've had firemen call and apologize."

Firefighters did not try to save the burning structure because Cranick had not paid the subscription fee for fire protection. Firefighters went to the scene to keep flames from spreading to nearby property whose owners had paid. The county does not have fire service, but rural residents can pay a fee to get service from the nearby town of South Fulton.

Her grandson, Lance Cranick, 21, who lived there with her and her husband, started the fire while burning trash in a barrel. He went inside to take a shower and upon returning saw a shed next to the house in flames. It spread despite his efforts to put it out with a garden hose.

Paulette Cranick said they had paid the fee in the past, although sometimes late, but it slipped their mind this year.

Lance Cranick said "this is something I've got to live with the rest of my life."

"To see the house and everything you grew up in burning down before your eyes is kind of harsh," he said.

He recalled that he called the fire department and asked them to come but they declined.

"I was in shock," he said.

Local officials did not immediately return phone calls Wednesday to The Associated Press for comment but have confirmed to local media that the family did not pay the fee.

Paulette Cranick and her husband are now living in their year-old camper and Lance is living with his mother. The family says it's received offers of help but that the aid isn't needed.

"We have insurance and are happy everyone is alive," she said.

  29. And yet they let the animals burning anyway, so I guess you are (dead) wrong. It all comes down to a matter of humanity. The bitter, miserly ones who bark "whiney-ness" at those who lose their house to fire show very little of it. Their minds are ruled by base economics. The lgoic of x graphed across y is the only thing that makes sense to them and whatever their political affiliation tells them.

  30. 11:38 Americans pay their fair share of taxes and that should include the firemans pay. Who's side are you on anyway? If a person was in that home would the firemen still stand there twidling their thumbs? You think it's right that firemen who have the equipment to put out fires not use the equipment if someone does not pay a fee? That is a moral dilemma.. Yes the community structure is designed for the protection and well being of the public that is it's purpose. The town, mayor, everything is there to make sure society works and everyone is cared for. Otherwise if that is not the case then why have it all. We live in a civilized society at least it should be. What those firemen did was uncivilized. The town should have included the fee in the taxes and not leave that out. Making it an option is foolish. You have a real problem you cannot distinguish that the firemen are supposed to be there specifically for the purpose of putting out fires not watching them burn.. There is definitely something wrong with your thinking.

  31. 7:17 Again, before the fee EVERY house burned. Get it??? Right or Wrong. If you don't like it, move to Tennessee and change the law. Many RURAL homes burn down everyday, due to the lack of infrastructure. Why not MANDATE fire hydrants at every rural home or require a firetruck in every driveway that way their tax dollars include fire protection? How about this, DON"T BUBN leaves next to your shed!!!

  32. 2:37 why don't you join the human race instead of being against it. Every other community knows how to keep the firemen available for all occupants of the town except this boneheaded town. My town even picks up my sticks for goodness sakes. And that town has the nerve to collect taxes and leave their residents unprotected. It is absurd. What's even worse is people like you who work against your own fellow man. Fee or no fee it is a fireman's duty to put out fires. Bureaucracy is not excuse from doing the right thing. That town did the wrong thing and I believe could be found guilty in the court of law and public opinion regardless of what policy they set up. It was a bad policy it left the residents unprotected. Like I said before why don't you join the human race? You should it's good for you.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 8:35 Typical liberal. You have absolutely NO IDEA what I do for the human race. If you could see past your own ignorance I was only commenting on the facts, not whether or not it was correct.

Never once did I say the town was right in letting the house burn. MOST RURAL COMMUNITIES HAVE NO FIRE PROTECTION!!!

Once again you think you know everything about everyone. For the record I saw smoke coming out of a local home a few years ago, called the fire department and ran to the door to notify the family. I helped them get their family pictures and other items of value to them before their house was gutted. SO YOU CAN STICK IT UP YOUR IGNORANT ASS. DO NOT PREACH TO ME ABOUT THE HUMAN RACE!!!

  34. FIRE THESE COWARDS LET THEM TRY TO MAKE IT WITHOUT THERE WELLFAIR CHECKS. START A VALINTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT THAT WILL PROTECT BASED ON HUMANITY AND NOT INCOME.I AM A ROOFER I BUY ALL MY TOOLS AND TRAIN MY MEN TO DO MY JOB. WHEN YOU BOUGHT YOUR HOME INSURANCE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT SHOULD COME WITH IT.THIS SHOULD BE THERE TOOL.
