Country To Implode Soon: Less People Working

The share of the population that is working fell to its lowest level last year since women started entering the workforce in large numbers three decades ago, a USA TODAY analysis finds.

Only 45.4% of Americans had jobs in 2010, the lowest rate since 1983 and down from a peak of 49.3% in 2000. Last year, just 66.8% of men had jobs, the lowest on record.

The bad economy, an aging population and a plateau in women working are contributing to changes that pose serious challenges for financing the nation's social programs.
"What's wrong with the economy may be speeding up trends that are already happening," says Marc Goldwein, policy director of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a non-partisan group favoring smaller deficits.

For example, job troubles appear to have slowed a trend of people working later in life, putting more pressure on Social Security, he says.

Another change: the bulk of those not working has shifted from children to adults.

  1. When is "soon"? I have been hearing that for 3 years. It seems like all we have to do is continue printing money and have the msm not report reality and we can continue forever.

  3. Bush and Wall Street killed us. Bush with his two unpaid-for wars and Wall Street for stealing money and tanking the dollar.

Obama tried to stimulate the economy but his bill didn't do enough fast enough (thanks to the Repubs). Now the Repubs are using the deficit to fire tens of thousands of state workers. Texas is talking about firing up to 100,000 teachers. Here in my state of PA, rumor is that our Repub gov wants to cut our education budget anywhere from 30-50%. This country is stupid enough already.

  4. 4:22 - 100 years ago in this country ( TO BE MORE SPECIFIC PA ) most schooling was accomplished by the 8th grade

How oh how did we even survive ???????????

Go back to sleep. We have invented yet another bottomless money pit that yields us nothing

  5. We can and should probably roll back a lot of things. Education does far more harm than good now.

Children are never taught anything important. They are not taught that we have a Constitutional Republic, that voting districts/gerrymandering affects the election, that corporate welfare is the order of the day, etc.

They just repeat the same nonsense hogwash the academics approve. Academics are in bed with the politicians as well.

For most people, a college education is simply a door to lifetime debt in the form of usurious student loans. They develop zero skills and waste most of their lives having a bunch of bozos that could not achieve anything in their lives "train" them in....the same thing they themselves did.

School should probably be up to 8th grade. Then you should probably either become an apprentice, join the military, or if your family is already loaded, goof off the rest of your life.

  6. sharonsj, I visit many of the same sites you do, and your posts, in some form, play the partisan blame game.

The Bush administration had deficits, but the Obama administration has taken the nation from Bush’s hundreds of billions in yearly deficits to over a trillion dollars in yearly deficits.

The deficit has escalated into the current $14,264,147,359,046.28 debt, which averages out to $46,000 for every citizen of the United States. The tax foundation has said Americans will pay more in taxes in 2011 than they'll spend on groceries, clothing and shelter combined.

It is the private sector which pays for the public employees, and the private sector is taxed out. Cuts have to be made.

Bernanke was reappointed by Obama. Now Bernanke’s QE 2 is propping up Wall Street and his low interest rates have hurt retirement saving.

Stop the partisan blame game. It’s both parties.

  7. The political partisan liberal lefty sharonji says:

"Obama tried to stimulate the economy but his bill didn't do enough fast enough (thanks to the Repubs). "
    How ?
As a Corporate State "Lefty" "stimulating the economy" by managing the socialisation of the losses of capital and continuing bailouts after the financial coup arranged by Goldman Smash and grab ,Paulson and Bush and with the bi- partisan support of the Obama Democrats .
The bribe of more handouts and improved

Whereby the wealth and past savings of the middle class are being looted ,by continual money printing /deficit spending for expanding Empires wars into Pakistan ,Yeman, and now Libya?

And Obamacare Subsidies for the insurance industry ,the equal of the Republican Bush subsidies for Big Pharma?

  8. She needs to travel? That's just a diversion from the self like the drugs she used in the 60s. I can't grasp how somebody can go through life without ever changing their viewpoints. Her education obviously stopped at 20. What an anti-learning doof she must be.

Every topic, post, whatever it may be about always picks blame on the Republicans. It's amazing why these sorry suckers who voted for Obama can't quite come to terms with their mistake. They're so emotionally fragile that they bring Bush in to explain the problems existing NOW in order to avoid admitting the Democrats they rooted for are failing this country and destroying it worse than the Bush administration did in eight years combined.

What a retard. Nevertheless, real change begins within; which is where few like looking.

  9. Calling Out SharonsjApril 15, 2011 at 3:16 PM

5:40/7:32/3:37 - Profuse thanks for standing up and calling out Sharonsj! I've been doing this for months now. It's good to see other posters putting geezer Sharon (a self-proclaimed MENSA member!) in her place. She's a partisan hack who never shuts up. The rants against Bush and Republicans got old very quickly and she has no new material. Personally, I think she does it for the attention, but other readers are now exposing her for what she is and hopefully she'll just wither away.
