Breaking Down Centi-Millionaire 'Papa' John Schnatter's Obamacare Math

Papa John Schnatter is no fan of Obamacare. The CEO of Papa John’s International has occasionally railed against the reform for months. Leading up to the election, he was a Mitt Romney supporter and fundraiser. Now that the election is over, he’s doubling down on his claim that the health care reform will force his company to increase pizza prices by 10-14 cents a pie. He estimates that Obamacare will end up costing his company $5-8 million annually.

The issue: the Affordable Care Act dictates that full-time employees (30 hours or more per week) at companies with more than 50 workers need to be provided health insurance. Schnatter has further claimed that some employers will cut employee hours to avoid providing them with healthcare.

His remarks have sparked anger on the internet, one thread on social news site Reddit, titled “There are plenty of places to get cheap s***** pizza in the world- Anyone else on reddit ready to boycott Papa John’s?” has captured more than 21,000 up-votes and 4,500 comments. A host of Facebook groups with the same idea have cropped up in the past 48 hours.

Meanwhile, shares in Papa John’s International have been tumbling since last Thursday, falling from $51.70 at market close Wednesday to $49.22 on Monday, a 4.2% drop. Read more....

  1. Big deal! 10-14 cents a pie! I woulda thunk much more. A small price to pay to have health insurance.

Look at the price we are paying for not having everyone covered.

    1. Oh, it's more. This is just on the surface, we just have to get through all 2,600 pages of this bullshit to comprehend it. The 47% think there is a free lunch. Sorry, but doctors and other health care workers will not work as slaves.

Obama has added several new layers of cost and lined his insurance buddies pockets with this monstrosity. This will go down as the biggest scam ever pulled on the American people.

    2. More to the point why Should I or PAPA Johns or the customer pay for YOUR insurance. Have you ever considered getting a job and paying for the things you want yourself? What kind of arrogant bastard thinks everyone else should pay for their EBT card, housing, health care, birth control, etc???

  2. This isn't the only business laying off and/or cutting people's hours due to Obamacare! It's only the beginning.

  3. Some folks are uninsurable. They are redlined out of the market because of pre-existing conditions or other reasons.

Even if you play by their rules, the minute you get sick they will try to terminate your policy, even if they have to use unfair means to do it. The Hartford Courant - courant.com - did a great article about the deviousness of insurance.

    1. What about the deviousness of gov't/politicians?

And some folks decide to get insured once they get sick. The whole point of insurance is to have it just in case you get sick. That's how all insurances work; regardless of what type ie car, fire, etc... And there are affordable plans out there.

If you are considered high risk due to your lifestyle or illness you pay more, and you should because you will end up using more money than those who live a healthier lifestyle or don't get sick.

Now, are there bad insurances out there? Yes. But to say that we should now hand our healthcare over to the gov't is ignorant.

Besides, I don't want to foot the bill for anyone else, nor should I be made to. Your health is your responsibility, not mine.

Perhaps, you should be just as passionate pointing out the deviousness and corruption in our gov't system; on both sides.

  4. New numbers say it would cost less than 5 cents a pie to provide health care for all of Papa John's workers. Plus, if he would cut back on some of his 22 cars, or not fill the moat surrounding his compound, or not pay himself an outrageous salary and bonus, John S should be able to keep his workers from dying.

To 12:12--very few companies now offer health insurance to their workers, or only offer it to the worker and not the worker's family. What kind of arrogant bastard thinks people should die because the owner is a greedy, cheap shit?

    1. Why do you think that an employer needs to supply you with healthcare? You work to get paid! Then you can do whatever you want w/your money.

Sharon is going to dictate to business owners how they should manage their money/business so that she can have healthcare LOL.

"John S should be able to keep his workers from dying." What a fear mongering statement; just as bad as those that cry "The end of the World is Coming".

If a business offers a healthcare plan w/the job that's fine, but to say that you are entitled to it is just as arrogant.

When I want to keep my money I'm called "greedy". When the gov't wants more of my money they call it "for the good of the people" (not greed). I call it BS.

    2. Sharonsj, Did you ever hear of minding your own business? People like you sitting on the sidelines with no clue while demanding others do as you wish is a joke.

Tell you what smarty pants, go risk some of your own capital and start a pizza chain. I'm sure thousands of investors will join you because of your brilliant business mind. Then you can pay your employees whatever you want.

I wish you all the success in your venture.

  5. Sharon,

You advocate theft as an entitlement. A very sad excuse for human being.

  6. Hey 10-33 PM, did you know the banks fabricate money out of thin air and then get taxpayer bailouts? Insurance companies get bailed out. The insurance bailouts encompass annuities that are backing malpractice settlements. So the taxpayers pay for everything, including bad, incompetent doctors.

  7. Sharonsj, rock on. Health care is everyone's business. But I think single-payor is the best way to go. Too much fragmentation in the current system.

What the other comments don't seem to understand that if people have trouble getting help then something will definately change.

We have to make the current system work, if we don't want change. Yet doctors continue to triage based not upon medical need, but upon what kind of insurance they prefer. And medical malpractice is dealt with by altering records and rubberstamping second opinions and by having local doctors on the medical board.
This cannot continue. Something has to change.

    1. No, it's not everyone's business.

You are the type of person that doesn't want anyone in your bedroom, right? So, why should anyone foot the bill for what happens in your bedroom? Why should your health, which usually is a result of how you live your life be my responsibility? I don't expect, nor do I comprehend the thought of mandating others to pay for my health.

The fact that you think gov't would do a better job at healthcare is ridiculous. You think gov't really cares about your well being? I suggest you wake the F up. It's just a means of controlling the masses; you control people's health/meds, you control them.

You and Sharon really need to take up a new hobby instead of trolling these sites LOL. You are an insult to independent thinkers.
