1,186,000 Tennesseans on Food Stamps

More than 1 in 6 Tennesseans on food stamps

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – More and more Tennesseans are turning to food stamps to make ends meet.

Nearly 1,186,000 Tennesseans, or more than one in six residents, currently receive some kind of food stamp assistance and the number continues to climb.

At the start of each month, the lines are always long at the Department of Human Services' family assistance office just north of downtown.

News 2 caught up with Kathy Bruce while she waited in line on Monday.

Her husband suffered a massive heart attack two weeks ago and will be out of work for the next two months.

"We can't live on my paycheck alone so I thought we could at least get help with food," she told News 2. "When you are down and out, you are willing to go to any lengths to get what you need."

For Amanda Higgins and her 16-month-old son, food stamps are their sole means of support.

"[Food stamps are] extremely important," she told News 2. "My son has got to have milk, my son has to have rice, snacks, all the things to eat, and so do I, you can see I am a pretty thin person."

The staggering 1,186,000 Tennesseans on food stamps today is some 300,000 more than just two years ago.

Why is Amanda Higgins bearing children?
    Useless eaters.

  2. I like to use the term "MouthBreathers."

They have kids but have no means to support them besides with long term government aid...Birth control and abortion are NOT dirty words.

  3. How about the term "Human Beings". Maybe they should elect a Czar to determine whether you're a "useless eater" or a member who contributes to the betterment of the party/society. Now did I read that in Brave New World, Animal Farm, or 1984 I forget.

  4. Many people are irresponsible in their reproductive habits. If you can't feed em, don't breed em. In the past, there's been a margin of error so that society could pick up the slack for feeding children of irresponsible parents. Those days, however, may be ending. If central government collapses, there may be some hungry, feral people roaming the landscape.

  5. There is only one way to stop the insane increase of single mothers needing handouts from the government. STOP GIVING THEM HANDOUTS! If the handouts stopped then women would get serious about birth control and maybe even try having a guy around to be the friggin father of their little bastards children.

  6. When I was very poor and went without food I never even thought about getting food stamps. Probably foolish because my tax dollars went for that. Always have been surprised at how easy it is for people to accept 'charity'.

  7. Feral people. Never heard that term. It sure fits what is coming.

  8. I have NO PROBLEM with helping people who need...Prob is those who take and take and either never look for a way out of poverty or assume I have to help them because they are poor and needy.

I like to help but often I see single moms with 2-3 kids struggling, not finishing school and just living hand to mouth...I see men begging or hustling not doing anything productive unless getting drunk/high or partying is a skill.

There are REALLY BAD TIMES coming and these people have nothing to fall back on and I actually fear when they decide to try to take my things based on their laziness or stupidity.

It's going to get violent and crazy...I just got my permit and I thank God I have it but honestly I would hate to use it.

  9. Permit? You don't need a permit to defend your home.

By filing for a carry you just insured that someone will be coming after you, but it won't be a guy on foodstamps.

  10. Too bad the government doesn’t hand out hearts.11:1 and 11:08 need one.

  11. 2:18..... big deal. the sheriffs and troopers and marshalls they'll send out have families too. bad karma begets bad karma.... its not going to be a one way street you know... there's survival itself at stake....

  12. Organic gardening and farming should be added to the elementary school curriculum, along with carpentry and cabin building. Will Allen, former pro athlete, was granted a MacArthur Foundation Genius grant for his work with gardening. Yes, he's black and yes, he comes from five generations of South Carolina farmers.

The food stamp staff could lend a hand. The food stamp users could lend a hand. The fast food restaurants in a 50 mile radius could add their green waste to compost bins. Local effort solves the food (and housing) problem, rather than taking a snarky, in loco parentis attitude.

  13. Well I guess it gives new meaning to being the volunteer state eh.

  14. Makes sense to have free or low cost birth control and sterilization clinics for low income..like he said, if you can't feed em don't breed em..even working people on low income got handouts as way back in the 60's, 70's I had neighbors that got surplus food before food stamps came out. They'd go to thrift shops for clothes, and churches had handouts..living on the edge is not the way to raise kids, and medicaid folks can get sterilized free. Go to planned parenthood for info.

  15. Some people are not responsible about child birth, I agree. I have not had a job for close to 2 years, yet my wife keeps insisting we have another baby. It's a constant battle, she will never win. I live in California. My neighborhood was nice and racially balanced, 11 years ago. Now I'm one of a small number of families that actually speak English. My illegal alien neighbors, just keep making more and more anchor babies. Each new edition gets them another $400.00 a month from Social Services and as long as they have a minor child in the house, deportation gets really complicated. These Mexicans come here with little or no education, but they sure know how to play the Social Services game!

As for food stamps, how else can people make it? In California, a family of 4, earning less than $32K (or $36K, not sure) is considered to be living in poverty. I once herd that an income of $78,000 was needed "just to get by" in CA.

High paying jobs are a thing of the past.

I do wonder what the Soup Plantation (all you can eat soup and salad) does with all the table waste. It really angers me to see a person build a huge salad and then eat 1/3 of it and walk out. The remaining 3/2 likely gets trashed. These people are too stupid or too lazy to build a small salad and if still hungry, go build another small salad. Agreed, all that organic waste should be composted. Everything organic in my house, goes into my garden soil and my Snow Peas don't mind a bit.

  16. 11:01PM She had a child for the same reason yo mama had you. Yo mama had a back up (yo daddy) and the reason he had a job was (yo pa pa gave him one)

  17. 5:43 If we had 2/3 of the population of this country thinking like you there would be no problem. Think small, think local, think no waste - people would be surprised at the sheer volume of waste generated in this country.

  18. I feel like I'm peering into some ballroom in a hotsy totsy hotel in Aspen Colorado, and there's all these Fascist well heeled soft hand types standing about denigrating 'the rabal'

Meanwhile I'm well aware how no one and nothing on this planet lives without the Charity of God.

Heartless is the new 'cool'. Hitler cool.

No thank you, I'll keep mine. I know you hate that, you hate me because I have a heart.

Please do. Hate me with all your might.

Hate this huge beating heart full of love which you can never ever have.

    :)

  19. These figures seem low, as here in the great state of TX, we have 10 million illegals on food stamps, or the "Lone Star card". Its more like 1 in 3 people in TX use the "Lone Star Card"! Tennesseans should be proud of their 1 in 6!

  20. Getting all people dependent upon the Government and of course the Federal Reserve banking system is the plan.

For years and years think tanks have determined how to change people into what they are today.

That is why Governments go after the Native American and Indigenous people all over the world because they want to be self sufficient and also not have the government teaching their children.

  21. Taking religion ut of the mix when it comes to birth control IS the solution...Most kids are by nature "idiots" when it comes to sex...Hence all the babies to teens.

Wish they did a Economics class that showed an education can get you versus living on the "dole."

As we get closer and closer to the edge...I peer down the side and it seriously scares me at how unprepared we are...All those talking about being "Kind hearted" will see these same people they helped TAKE by force when the handouts die out.

I'm sorry they didn't prepare...They don't prepare and they are NOT preparing...How can I feel bad if they won't help themselves?

Like I said...Those who are trying deserve our help...Those who overwelmed themselves with kids they couldn't afford should get less and less or be forced to follow some rules:

    1. Get your GED
    2. Get your driver's license
    3. Take an employment workshop
    4. Take a Life Economics class
    5. Take a dietician class
    6. Do community clean up hours in return for the $ or food stamps

    Etc Etc

  22. I'm buying more canned food today after work. Something is coming. It may be a year or more away, but something is happening, and it ain't good. I think the central government is going to collapse. Here's how: our money is inflated into worthlessness. Gov. workers don't show up because they don't get paid. No gov. workers = no government.

  23. Unfortunately all the mass breeders in American over the last three decades have been idiots. That along with the media has created a society of complete mind controlled drones.

Losers that think by making a few carbon copies of themselves that somehow they are more important.

TPTB want obedient workers that don't think too much. They have that now.

  24. 10:30 you are probably right. What you are planning to do makes perfect sense also. There is no downside. You just rotate through the food anyway.

Nothing is more important than water and food.

Then a way to protect it.

    Then alternate savings like PMs.

Tell no one you are storing food. If things get bad your so called friends will come cut your throat for it.

  25. 11:13am yes you may call me an idiot if you like...BUT in the end it's what actually happens that proves us right or wrong on the issue.

By the way I work at a Level 4 prison in Monterey County and I read plenty of C-Files (Inmate records/transcripts)...I see so many good people who were hurt by bad people in a blink of an eye over nothing.

BUT it hasn't changed my opinion of people just reinforced it...God doesn't want you to be used, abused, taken advantaged of...Sometimes people need a kick in the ass to wake up.

To make the able body get up and work...To make the obese get fit...To make the uneducated go back to college/vocational school.

Those who believe that just sitting on your ass and waiting to be saved while playing "Martyr" will be sadly disappointed.

  26. F*ck work (in the system) and the fascists who demand you do it to be "righteous". F*ck the worthless thing called school, which only makes drones out of clay figures. Time for a leap of consciousness, it seems.

  27. If you have ever been on foodstamps you are worthless. Period point blank you are the scum of the earth and you and your children deserve to not eat because you are lazy and had kids you could not support. Quit stealing my money and learn to live on your own two feet scumbags.

  28. 6:42

I remember clearly the days after the AIG bailout. They got the money, passed out bonuses, planned a big-ass party (they called it a retreat) and changed none of their old, bad habits. This got so many people pissed off, that the AIG big wigs has to hire security firms to follow them home. They were clearly scared shitless. I guess a few of us common people must have done something right.

2:35 - You'll change your tune if you ever find yourself in a position of need. I can't go anywhere without someone asking me for some spare change. I go to a self service car wash and people come to me and ask if they can help me. Homeless people hang out in my bank's parking lot asking for money. I'll guess they are hoping to get a 20, since that's all the ATM will spit out.

Yesterday I bought a 100 round box of 12 gauge ammo. I don't even own a shotgun, but very soon the only thing that will have any real value is gold, silver and ammo. I figure a 25 round box is a good barter tool.

  29. Well, all you haters of poor people can hate me too. I'm finally breaking down and applying for food stamps. That's because my utility bills, and my school and property taxes, are going so high that I have no money left for decent groceries. I can't survive on packaged crap from Dollar General because the sodium content is going to kill me. I need help just to buy meat and vegetables.

  30. Again...To those who kicked into the system THAT'S what the programs are for.

The problem is the FITH GENERATION WELFARE FAMILIES...Or young kids just popping kids out without ever having finished school or working.

For those in trouble now who worked hard but due to circumstances are suffering...I understand and pray for you...For the others?

I don't feel any pity...Sorry just being honest.
