Food Shortages Coming, Buy Commodities: Jim Rogers

The financial crisis is likely to lead to food shortages in a few years because the agriculture sector is in dire need of funds, legendary investor Jim Rogers told CNBC Friday.

Buying distressed commodities is a better way to make money than investing in stocks, according to Rogers.

"The fundamentals (for agriculture) have gotten better," he said. "The inventories are now at the lowest they've been in decades, not in years."

"Sometimes in the next few years we're going to have very serious shortages of food everywhere in the world and prices are going to go through the roof."

Cotton and coffee are good buys because they are very distressed, while sugar, despite the fact that it has gone up a lot, is still down 70 percent from its all-time high, according to Rogers.
"I don't think that the problems of the world are behind us yet," he said.

Investors shouldn't bother with stocks because commodities are likely to win in both the optimistic and the pessimistic scenario, Rogers said.

  1. Ha a few years ago I would have thought all this crap was like the Y2K thing...Then after reading and reading and seeing #'s and stats I got spooked.

In 2005 I was able to unload my home at the semi-top and started downsizing...Thank God for lil sites like this...So now I'm semi-hoarding and it's so weird...I get a bit of a kick when I do.

Hoarding is my new hobby of sorts...BUT as I've read in many places..."No man is an island."

One person CANNOT survive in a economic collapse by himself you need 3 minumum...For safety and to protect what you have...Look at Hati...In a collapse of a central governemnt due to economic/natrual disaster society reverts to primal times.

My only suggestion...Store some lil bottles of vodka/A ton of buglar tabbacco and rolling papers and...Good coffee in fact as much as you can get along with sugar and creamer.

No matter what people will want these 3 items and are semi-addicted to them...Nice to have barter items...JUST in case.

Sounds kooky I know but isn't everything we never thought possible happening slowly but surely?

  2. Jan 15th, I couldn't agree more. Like you, I've been following a number of websites for years seeing this huge approaching storm. I started preparing a few years ago as well and have collected a nice array of survival gear and things I'll need during extended periods of not being able to get ordinary items from store shelves.

People should begin preparing for lack of items in stores now because it's coming. It may become apparent to people until it's actually happening that they can't get bread, milk, eggs etc at the store but it's coming.

Frankly, I don't think any 'barter' system is gonna last long if things get real desperate.
Instead, there will be a lot of skullduggery going on.

  3. 12:37pm Indeed depends on the area...Trust me weapons I have but I KNOW that this isn't a movie and people will come for my things if they suspect so I am trying to quietly enlarge my circle of friends...No one man no matter how well prepared can survive...In the end you need a lil fear to keep them away and that is sadly how gangs work...Intimidation.

So stock up and have a Plan B if you can...That camping or leaving the city crap is a fantasy at best...You need to make a stand where you can but you can only do it with like minded people...Everything else will melt...I'm thinking and Economic Crash like Argentina or Mexico not Mad Max...A slow dwindling of people just going down the tubes like Britain did...Sadly but slowly losing power becoming a has-been for now.

BUT for a short while it will be the Wild Wild West...and by a short while I mean 2-3 years min.

What a load of crap and fear mongering,LOL

You guys just go ahead and spend all that time and money, life goes on,LOL. Folks have been saying this for years and look.....WE ARE ALL STILL HERE,lol.

I find it hard to imagine why anyone would keep all that crap on hand when it's just down the street at the local grocery store. I from the Midwest and we have plenty of grain and meat, and we still will manage to feed all of you scaredee cats HAHA

  5. The price of sugar at the supermarkets and even Wal-Mart is ridiculous now (went from $2.72 to $3.19 for a 5-lb bag--an 18% increase). But you can still get it cheap at Dollar General ($1.50 for a 4-lb bag).

I've been stocking up on everythng for some time. Even if things don't fall apart, I've still saved money on these items because prices keep going up.

The suggestion to get vodka is a good one. It has a lot of uses beyond getting drunk.

  6. Troll's, do you not realize that you have been exposed by Cass Sunstein, president Obama’s appointee to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

He blatantly admits that you are being paid to be annoying and untruthful. Besides you do realize that a majority of these articles are based on FACT and that you guys never back up your comments

  8. Trolls, spooks and disinfo agents on this site are excellent examples of US intercity public school graduates. Actually, they can read, so perhaps they are cut above. Though apparently English grammar was a subject they MISSED (or failed).

Meanwhile, those of us living in reality, have known for years there would be a food shortage, possibly starting in the US this year. We have been stocking up on dehydrated and freeze dried food for years. Looks like we are correct again....

    Stupid trolls...

yeah right 3:40, how that tasty freezed dryed food taste now, after 30 years? loser
I prefer fresh food from the GROCER just down the road from me, not the crap they feed you on the space shuttle.
LOL....stock food for 30 years, YOU HAVE ALL BEEN SUCKERED HERE, just another business that feeds off your fears,LOL. I laugh all the way to the bank with my extra money NOT spent on that crap

  10. The earthquake was on Tuesday. Now it's Friday and the streets are full of hungry people with weapons, looking for food and drink.

In the near future, you canlLook for this in a neighborhood near you.

I have plenty of food and lead on hand.

I have always liked good horror flicks. Thats why I come to this site, to get scared LOL.

THEN I shut off the TV (computer web page that points here) and go back to reality. Great Sci Fi Page Indeed!! I am very much entertained. Keep em coming : )

  14. All you have to do is go to your local grocery store to see how bad food prices are going to be. Many of the foods I bought a year ago are now priced about .75-1.00 more than what they were a year ago. When TSHTF, trying to barter without a gun or backup would be a dangerous thing to do unless with people you know well. So only get things you know you would use. Be sure to get a tetanus shot too. You will need this protection they are good for ten years.

  16. Its not like SOME empires collapse, or even MOST -- they ALL do. But the TV lobotomized fata*s who troll here and other places figure "AmeriKKKa will ALWAYS RULE! Praise McJebus!"

Yes, people have forecast hard times before, and been wrong sometimes and right sometimes. And anybody now, trying to pick exact dates and scenarios is silly as well. But as opposed to something sudden: whether theoretical like the Y2K scare, or sudden like Haiti. This is a bunch of very big, very slow cycles lumbering on and on to lower and higher points on the graphs.

This isn't a sudden change, this is like the tide coming in. The change IS happening, and showing no signs of doing anything but accelerating. And its not the end of the world, McJebus ain't coming back for those superstitious types. But it certainly is going to be an end to America getting to consume FAR more than it produces.

We started really noticing these trends 7 or 8 years ago, and adjusted our life to match. Sold our house, got completely out of all debts. Moved back to the family farm. And got setup to be more self sufficient. But, as has been noted above, if you think that stored food and weapons will keep you going long term? History shows you are wrong. Eventually you will get taken, or simply run out of resources. The only long term solution is to be able to GROW food, or have a renewable asset or skill valuable enough to trade with those who grow food.

And, the best way of being secure is definately community. If I make sure my farm is helping feed that guy who is a hunter and has a house on the hill looking down on our farm? Sniper. And lots of other people in our region, we'll help keep them fed and warm. They'll help keep their food source working, and we'll all trade back and forth.

Humans have been doing this for tens of thousands of years actually. And we are pretty good at it. Its the spoiled, obese, TV lobotomized folks who can't imagine life without grocery stores and gas stations who are going to be a PITA. But they'll be toast eventually, there certainly will be lots of dark little feudal style enclaves based on heavily armed groups. And . . . the cycle of battle and nation building will begin again.

History is a b*tch, she doesn't always repeat herself but as Mark Twain said "it usually rhymes"

  17. Another potential disaster and chaos to follow, just another opportunity for the seasoned investor to clean up big time while the world starves to death. Now we know of three certainties in life
death , taxes and now the bloody leacherous investor. Is this now the sum total of the meaning of life, money money and even more money.

  18. 6:13 There is much truth in what you say.

There are also some things that are not.

There is also ( very typical for this site ) some speculation.

This country is more than capable to feed, house and clothe it's 325 million citizens. We are blessed with vast natural resources and a technology that allows us to utilize them. The problem is that this "nation of laws" has become a nation of inlaws if you will.

Also; regardless of your religious standing ( not believing in Jesus or God is just as much a religion as believing ) do not attempt to tell anyone else on this planet what is going to transpire regarding either 'cause I don't know and neither do you.

  19. To 4:26 & everyone: you're so right, why buy that tasteless dehydrated and space food, when you can run to local grocers and buy fresh? Stocking up on canned meats, veg, dry foods on sale is smart regardless of the predictions..For decades, I've heard these predictions and friends are not prepping because nothing happened from y2k and stuff was thrown out; one friend put 4 boxes of home canned goods into the compost (kept the jars) last year, stuff she canned for y2k. They couldn't eat it all. I'm sick too, of wasting money and throwing out/donating large amounts of food because nothing happens. One friend had store bought cans explode in the pantry, several friends died with a freakin' house full of crap. Incl. a family member and I had to clean the mess up.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Laura nothing happened on Y2K because we fixed it! If we just ignored the situation there would have been chaos. In this instance we are IGNORING EVERYTHING PLUS making it worse. Therefore our "Y2K" collapse will come true and people better get prepared.

  21. 6:36, wow. So a child who was isolated its whole life from interaction with other humans superstitions (religious) influence - and therefore didn't believe in Jesus. Would he be therefore religious?!

You need to get out more. 80% of Americans consider themselves Christian (though most haven't even read their own book!), but 2/3rds of humanity ARE NOT CHRISTIAN. You live in a bubble.

The fact is, I live a giving, loving, honest life and am a great community member because I know that it feels right. And that when you spread good in a community, its more likely to come back. But I don't beLIEve your superstition. And if you beLIEve in a god that would have me tortured in 'hell' for eternity for not jumping through the right mental hoops, despite being a good person? Then you sir, you worship evil.

  22. 12:59 I think he would be - on his own level of course.

Have you ever met a really gifted person? I know a lady that can calculate fractions faster than I can run a calculator - no formal training and never read a math book & she's 88.

Do you submit that being a Christian means being able to recite the Bible? Do you think the same percentages apply to people of Buddhism or Atheists or Muslim faiths ?

I am glad that you are a decent and caring human being; the world needs more of you. where oh where do you think those seeds were sowed ?

One of the worst scourges of mankind is his willingness to judge others - whomever or whatever if anything you worship is your business
but I submit we all are born with an inate sense of right and wrong and the most brilliant minds that have ever walked this earth all agreed on one thing; There is a God, a higher power - you belive what you want; I'll believe what I know is right and Einstein.

  24. Laura - thanks for one of the most ignorant posts I have read here to date. Anyone who doesn't believe storing food is prudent please report to the corner of the room and begin sucking on a pacifier.

As for Freeze Dried, it usually has a shelf life of over 20-25 years, so gee wiz, I wonder if it is prudent.

    Disinfo garbage.

To the folks that still have dendrites firing:

NOTHING is more important than storing up water and food (that includes seeds and a garden plan if possible). NOTHING! Not guns, not gold or silver, not painting your home or ANYTHING.

Get your ass to Costco tomorrow my friends. Get all you can afford, shove it in the bottom of a closet or whereever.

Look at Haiti as an example.

WATER WATER WATER FOOD FOOD FOOD.

  25. By the way a can of salmon you buy now will have an expiration of 2014.

Actually, you can double that. It is in the best interests of people who sell food to exaggerate expiration times.

If you aren't storing stuff in a hot shed, double it.

There are a lot of can goods that will be just fine for 8-10 years.

Canned vs freezed dried --? Where are you storing it? In a garage or someplace that is freezing? Go FD.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The $100 freeze dried emergency food bucket at Costco is a hell of a deal. Buy at least two. Have water stored.

Sleep better at night knowing you will eat well while the unprepared slowly die of starvation.

    That is truth.

  27. This is no Y2K scenario. In the USA you live in now there are 10x scenarios where you will be without a source of food for days or weeks.

Wise up and listen to people who have reasoned it out. Not selling fear. Selling common sense.

I'm off to party while the partying is still around.

  28. I can't WAIT to see this nation crash. Yeah, it scares the crap out of me. I might become chum, along with my children. But if any hedonistic empire in history has ever deserved having its ass handed to it more than us? Its been secret.

America has millions of smart, creative, empathic citizens who I hope will reign. But we have TENS of millions of obese, barely literate, spoiled citizens who frankly deserve to reap what they've sown.

    And they will.

You can debate and passionately argue when, and what form this reckoning will take. But it will happen.

Watch and wait. And when it unravels, have the courage to not point fingers and pull triggers - but to realize we all dug this hole together.

  29. Save up and store your Coca Cola and Twinkes, for like in the movie Zombieland people will go to great lengths to get their fix, be it sugar high or television and commercials. It could be ugly for a time. But I think we will evolve. I think we have it in ourselves to slough off this ugly period in the history of human beings and be something else.

  31. 12:59.... it a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the True and Living God. The GOD who created everything. Some like you, Billions across the globe actually have hardened your heart to the truth and will pay accordingly in eternity. Once you are there, you can't come back and warn your friends you were wrong. Thats the pisser of it, isn't it. You are betting with YOUR life.... Define "GOOD" for me. Im sure you'll define "Good" by YOUR world view, not the world view of the Creator, and guess what.... The Creator gets to make the terms of this game, not you , not me....
"There is not one that is good. All have sinned. There is not one that is righteous. And sin ( wrong doing, wrong thinking ) must be avenged. Some people call it Karma. Problem is... if you want to pay for your sins in hell, thats your business... but wouldn't you rather make peace with God and accept his offer of redemption, and live in glory forever ? ? There is a choice. You reject God or you accept him on his terms. those are the only two choices... To posit otherwise is pride, arrogance and vanity..... and its betting your LIFE that you are right and GOD is wrong. I know how it all ends..... Its not too late yet, if you are reading these words to repent. BTW, im not judging you, im just passing along truth....
    SEEK TRUTH...

    ReplyDelete
  32. No, actually betting on life is living in the here and now. Now, whether or not a person is damned eternally for believing or not is another matter. I would rather suffer eternally than pray to a malevolent or vengeful god. I believe people are only damned as long as they damn themselves to their own spiritual prisons. What lies beyond neither you nor I know by definition of the infinite. Try not to pigeonhole "him" with your narrow point of view.

Hey Christians-Stop talking babble and putting religion into everything.

Trust me I believe in a God but I also believe he doesn't really interfere in human affairs as a whole...This is his great petri dish his ant farm...He's watching us but he will not interefere...Religion is a good comfort blanket but in the end so is my S & W 9mm and Mossberg Shotgun.

You don't tell people in hurricane ares NOT to prepare because Jesus is coming...You tell them to get ready...That's what this blog is about...getting ready or not getting ready.

Religion a good thing but first I'd like to prepare...Get my ducks in a row...Hell even the Mormons/Amish don't look so crazy anymore do they?

  36. Every complex system created by man fails sooner or later. Today, we have the most complex financial system and food delivery system ever created, and all dependent upon telecommunications, power and fuel. Those systems could be gone in a heartbeat in not one but several scenarios. It is not a question of whether it will fail or not, but how severe the failure will be. It is prudent to be ready for the worst of course. Even without disaster prep, getting out of debt, becoming more self sufficient, etc, etc is a good thing.
