Number of US business Start Ups Drops 24%

Politicians love to repeat that small businesses are the "engine of our economy." But, according to a new report, that engine is in need of serious repair.

The number of new businesses launched in the U.S. declined 24 percent in the United States in 2009 and 10 percent in the 20 most affluent countries over the same period, according to the annual Global Entrepreneurship Monitor.

The GEM conducted 180,000 interviews in 54 countries in 2009 and found a year-over-year decline in the number of people around the world who thought there were attractive opportunities for business formation.

For an increasing number of people in the world's richest countries, the impetus to start a business was driven by necessity. But interestingly, a small number perceived an increase in opportunity during -- and because of -- the recession. Of this optimistic segment of survey respondents, Niels Bosma, the report's director of research, told the WSJ:

  1. Someone published the top 10 billionaires in the US. My comment was get black and white evidence of their contribution toward creating small businesses in the US that hire uemployed US workers or tax them (Bill Gates, Buffet, Ellison, the Walton family, Michael Dell) at confiscatory rates.

  3. These elitests in Washington and thru-out this once great nation have no conception of what it is like to have a dream and follow it to fruition in what is a small business.

It takes a multitude of human givings. It takes guts, vision, fortitude, damn hard work to boot.

Our current 'leadership" has none of the qualities needed to run the smallest business sucessfully and that to me says it all.

We; as a nation have become ambiguous to the point that we don't even recongnize ourselves anymore. We have 15 different religions; 12 different races; 5 different political affiliations hells bells man we cannot even agree
on what constitutes a marriage. hell - I see a military brigade and without the uniform I'd have no clue what nationality this force was from
there's blacks, whites, hispanics, puerto ricans, hawaiians, chinese, japanese, russians,
eskimos, indians both american & whatever who the hell are we - - -

No - sorry to say the beginning of the end was when we started seeing gray instead of black and white. It's either right or it;s wrong; leaving it open to interpretation is where we're at & look where it has us - oh boy !

  4. Here is a story I read last night....

A project trumpeted as a potential solution to America's energy needs is on the verge of taking off with the U.S. military, but government bureaucracy is causing frustrating delays and a chokehold on funding, raising out-of-pocket expenses for the company spearheading the technology.
