Millions of Unemployed Face Years Without Jobs

BUENA PARK, Calif. — Even as the American economy shows tentative signs of a rebound, the human toll of the recession continues to mount, with millions of Americans remaining out of work, out of savings and nearing the end of their unemployment benefits.

“There are no bad jobs now. Any job is a good job,” said Jean Eisen, who became unemployed more than two years ago.

Economists fear that the nascent recovery will leave more people behind than in past recessions, failing to create jobs in sufficient numbers to absorb the record-setting ranks of the long-term unemployed.

Call them the new poor: people long accustomed to the comforts of middle-class life who are now relying on public assistance for the first time in their lives — potentially for years to come.

Yet the social safety net is already showing severe strains. Roughly 2.7 million jobless people will lose their unemployment check before the end of April unless Congress approves the Obama administration’s proposal to extend the payments, according to the Labor Department.

Here in Southern California, Jean Eisen has been without work since she lost her job selling beauty salon equipment more than two years ago. In the several months she has endured with neither a paycheck nor an unemployment check, she has relied on local food banks for her groceries.

  1. Glad I still have my job, although now the workload has escalated because of depts merging & staffing shortages; labor benchmarking means no new staff will be hired. Sometimes I get a lunch break (LOL). But as a coworker put it, 'just be thankful you have a job, and keep quiet.' 10-4. Another friend said he was too young to remember the recession in 1971. But he's never seen anything akin to what is happening now.

  2. This article is correct to a point. First of all, there are no real social safety nets in the USA, unlike other countries like Canada and Western European countries, so once the unemployment runs out, you're done. And not everyone can get welfare or food stamps. I am one of those unemployed who only got six months of benefits and I'm not getting an extension because Congress is going on vacation instead of extendind benefits. So there you go.

8:16, I hate to say this, but right before my company shut down, they also did this to us -- made us all responsible for others' workloads, etc. They slowly started laying people off and said our company was "safe." What a lie. In a few weeks we were shut down. Watch out, when a company says everything is okay, that's when they are going to shut down.

  3. 8:16, a normal recession doesn't last as long as what's going on right now. This isn't a recession anymore, it's the beginning of another depression. Good luck with your job; at this point, it really is a matter of luck in some ways -- those who have a job do not have one because they are more blessed or those unemployed are not less blessed by God, as some people try to say erroneously; at this point, it's just a matter of luck and chance for the most part.

  4. Yeah, if it were true that people doing well right now are "blessed" then it would mean the bankers are God's most beloved. If anything, it seems like evil rewards the bad people these days.

  5. Recently I have been criticized for the outdated recommendations I posted.

I urge you to read the article above in its entirety.

Let me emphasize again. No man will likely survive the coming storm alone. Hold fast to your family. If you do not have a family, become a useful member of another family. Form alliances with individuals of sufficient intelligence and ethics to increase your chance of physical and financial survival.

This is not the time to be considered a liability to others. If you do not have a skill, learn now. If you do not understand or have the knowledge of basic preparation, learn now.

Be not distracted, act honorably in all things, and prepare to endure to the end. The herd will shortly be culled.

  6. So people should accept that they be culled? Why not "cull" the scum responsible for this catastrophe?

  7. Brilliant.

Absolutely brilliant well thought out response to a complex situation. There can be little doubt your depth of analysis of the situation will carry you through safely.
