Job cuts TODAY? 20,650! The COUNTDOWN toward the Great Depression

Comments: Here are another 20,000 people today that will be joining the ranks of food stamp collectors.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The nation's job market, in the final month of a brutal 2008, was dealt a savage blow Thursday when four major companies - AT&T Inc., DuPont Co., Viacom Inc. and Credit Suisse Group - announced job cuts that total 20,650.

And this is just the latest bit of bad news. On Wednesday, State Street Corp., Jefferies Group and The Carlyle Group announced job cuts totaling about 3,000.

This follows a brutal November, when U.S. employers announced plans to cut 181,671 jobs, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. ADP's monthly employment report showed that private sector payrolls fell by 250,000 jobs in November compared to the prior month.

Just in the week ended Nov. 29, 509,000 Americans filed initial jobless claims, according to the Labor Department. That was less than expected by economists, but only the fifth time since 1992 that job cuts exceeded a half-million

  2. Just wait till Detroit completes all of their layoffs. Even if they do receive the bailout $$ they are requesting. See what happens then. IMO this is all stemmed from outsourcing jobs in the first place starting in the late 90's and early 00

  3. Fractionally, we have all been laid off to some extent since wages haven't kept up with inflation for years forcing us common folk to get deeper and deeper in debt. The housing bubble just gave us a warm fuzzy feeling that things weren't so bad.

  4. People always hate to talk about when they are laid off. But as it has become every day's news headline since Yahoo started it with cutting 1500 of its task force last year, now a need of platform has been in demand where people can express their selves in words how they are feeling about their company, whey the got laid off was that justified or not.
And every thing they want to tell anonymously. And www.layoffgossip.com is providing you that platform.
