No Bullets No Gold

6/22/2009
by John Rubino

Facts have a different feel when they’re personal. And speaking personally, evidence that Americans are seriously spooked is starting to pile up. In the past few months:

• While researching a magazine article on offshore investing I interviewed Erika Nolan, executive director of the Sovereign Society, a Florida-based consultancy. She noted that her client base is changing: “Historically, offshore solutions have been reserved for very high net worth individuals. But starting in about 2001 we started to see people in the ‘mid-tier millionaire’ stream -- $1 million to $30 million net worth -- saying ‘I’ve worked really hard, I don’t want to have my assets at risk.’ Most recently we’ve been seeing a big demand from Americans saying ‘I just want to put $100,000 or $500,000 offshore. I’m reporting it; it has nothing to do with taxes.’ It’s just asset safety at this point.”

• My father-in-law decided he wanted some gold, so I called a local coin store and asked Kevin, the shop’s owner, to find us some Krugerrands. He predicted a few weeks for delivery, which seemed reasonable given the chatter about tight supplies, so I placed an order and wrote a big check. That was three months ago, and the coins still aren’t in. I called Kevin the other day and found him both busy and frustrated. “I could make a million dollars this year if I could only get inventory,” he said. “This would be a career year.” He apologized for the long wait and said there were now only a few people ahead of us on the list.

• I checked in with a friend, a business owner and semi-professional poker player just back from a Seattle gambling trip. But instead of talking poker or kids we toured his stash of freeze-dried food and his growing arsenal that includes a Dirty Harry-style 44 magnum pistol and a very cool black pump-action shotgun. This guy is well-educated, well-traveled, and well-off, and he’s preparing to blow away looters from his bedroom window.

• My 11-year-old son Alex and I stopped by a local gun store. This is going to be a “skills acquisition” summer in which we learn to ride horses, handle guns, and change a bike flat (and when I finally learn to Salsa) so we had some general questions for Charles, the gun shop owner, about gun safety classes and which rifle is the best starter model. Charles said our selection was limited: It seems that there’s a run on ammo, and he can’t guarantee anything more than low-velocity 22 caliber bullets. When we got home I did a quick Google search for “bullet shortage” and sure enough, that market looks just like those for gold and silver coins, with demand swamping supply, long waiting lists, and panicky hoarding.

It’s no secret, of course, that small-denomination bullion is hard to come by and gun sales are way up, but finding out first-hand that this stuff is unavailable brings home the reality of the situation, which is that the social mood is growing darker. On the surface everything looks normal; no one is protesting in the streets, the trash is getting picked up, and elections are as orderly as ever. But the market is quietly reallocating resources as individuals insure against a systemic breakdown. Hope those Krugerrands come soon.

  1. See, cash4gold is a method of confiscation.
There is no need for the government and the PTB to forcibly confiscate gold. You get essentially the same thing by reducing the sheeple to poverty and then offering CASH 4 GOLD.

I suspect JP Morgan and Goldman Sucks behind most of these cash 4 gold programs.

I suspect the chain of domino's will start with a default in California, progressing systemically throughout the states and ending with the Federal government declaring 'feat majori'

  2. With all the new draconian Homeland security laws, those with stock piles of ammo and guns will be labled as terrorists by the government. Then promptly arrested and made example of. "Everyman for himself" is going to get real ugly real fast if it comes to that. A good group of friends and family is better than all the ammo one can carry.

  3. Anyone who disagrees with those in power will eventually be labeled a terrorist or extremist and be gotten rid of.

  4. Yep. Those Fema camps and coffins are not there for looks. The clandestine Empire is shedding its facade of being a free land.

Obama puppet on TV this morning spewing forth his Oligarch diatribe about how the Federal Reserve needs even more power.

Was really looking forward to living in false freedom for another ten years. Oh well. The sheep deserve what they get. Sad though.

  6. 90% silver coins would be better than gold ounces. The smaller denominations trade better in a societal collapse. Imagine the situation: you have found a person with a 50-lb. bag of rice who is willing to accept gold or silver, but all you have is a 1 oz. gold coin. Wouldn't you rather pay with a few silver dimes or quarters than part with that entire gold coin?

  7. We probably won't even be able to use the gold or silver, or even barter among ourselves. At least not without the insane
maniacs in government saying it's illegal to
do so. There is a part in the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act that states just that!
Ladies and Gentlemen, prepare to defend yourselves!!

  8. The dumbest move of my life is not getting the hell out of here while I still can. I know it is 'global' but this will be worst. New Zealand? It means leaving for good. Never seeing anyone you know again. It is hard to do.

I know the above poster would say that even thinking of leaving would be cowardly. But only a fool fights tyranny head on to defend a bunch of ignorant, worthless, sheep, lemming idiots. That's what is boils down to - us vs them right? The American People shut off their brains and accept any lie or manipulation now. These are the people that will stand by your side? No. Never before in the history of this current modern civilization have a people became so pathetic, and apathetic.

  9. The Gold won't help even if you can get any. You cant shoot it and you cant eat it. It is worthless when the time for it comes. Where was the writer of the article five years ago? Shopping for a McMansion or Lexus?? You must have ALREADY GOTTEN the beans and rice and guns and bullets. You act, not wait. Your to be aware, not head in sand like the author seemed to be.

  10. well said above anon. that and anyone who can only find .22 rounds is either a)not looking to hard or b) a knucklehead that shouldn't have a gun anyway. gold and silver be damned, I'll take the actual tangible goods over that any day. we must never, ever fear these greedy power mongering elitists. stand firm, stand united. we are not the first ones on this continent to come together in the face of adversity and unless this whole planet is demolished in WWIII, we certainly wont be the last. this may be more of a new beginning than an "end".

  11. Anon above, you can trade it,sell it, barter with it. We have for 2000 yrs. What else do you think we will use as money? Horse manure? Use your head, the Chinese are buying billions of dollars worth of gold since 2003...ya think they might know something??

  12. how'd that work during FDR's gold confiscation order in april 1933? think that will be impossible this time?

  13. Silver is a better hedge right now and easier to use for barter. Gold confiscation would fail miserably.

Absolutely agree 100% that essentials like food, water, fuel, protection are much higher on the priority list than gold or silver.

  14. Try the Goldreef city Mint in South Africa for gold Bullion. I myself have a couple of Kruger rands stashed away food for about two years but alas no guns or ammo because the communist ANC goverment is clamping down on guns. The average white man is basicly defenceless against the take over

  15. PREPARE YOURSELVES, it's way worse than even
we who are awake can imagine!! The electronic and advanced technologies that are
going to be used to control/kill us, is incredible. It's what is inside of our hearts
    and mind's that is important.

  16. The only 'thing' that will not hyperinflate is home prices. No one will be able to buy one. No jobs and skyhigh interest rates = dead housing.

In three years you will be able to purchase a home with one gold coin. Sounds like lunacy, but it is not. Ask anyone from Argentina, circa 2001.

  17. purchase the gold and save your money. this is the good source to save your money.
