49.1 Million Americans Starving

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 49 million Americans -- one in seven -- struggled to get enough to eat in 2008, the highest total in 14 years of a federal survey on "food insecurity," the U.S. government said Monday.

While Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said programs such as food stamps softened the impact of an economic recession, anti-hunger groups pointed to the huge increase from the preceding year when 36.2 million people had trouble getting enough food and a third of them occasionally went hungry.

"The survey suggested that things could be much worse but for the fact that we have extensive food assistance programs," Vilsack told reporters. "This is a great opportunity to put a spotlight on this problem."

About 14.6 percent of U.S. households, equal to 49.1 million people, "had difficulty obtaining food for all their members due to a lack of resources" during 2008, up 3.5 percentage points from 2007 when 11.1 percent of households were classified as food insecure.

  1. I strongly dispute those figures. I have never seen anyone suffering from hunger, starvation, or malnutition in the US, and in fact, most of our low earners appear to be spectacularly well fed.

Listen... you tea party types sound crazy when you talk about Fascism... You don't seem to know what it means...

Fascism: a political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government (as opposed to democracy or liberalism)

Question: Did you guys ever use that word before 2008?

If not... What does that tell you about yourself?

I know I will get a lot of angry responses, because I think there is a lot of that going around... and it's warranted.

I agree with the anti FED stance and other issues that tea party goers advocate... But you look a little bit crazy when you use Fascism... Bush/Cheney had much stronger authoritarian tendencies than Obama... Where were you denouncing them??? Hypocrites.

I'm sure many of you were... but I suspect most were not... Don't use words like Fascism... it makes you look kooky.

    Sincerely,

  4. They may be getting enough calories, but not enough nutrients.

    Big difference...

They may be living on mac and cheese-- and other cheap food.

Tons of out of date bread from the food bank.

But--they are not getting complete nutrition-- so their bodies are "starving" for enough vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.

  5. 4:33 - Yeah, let's all be politically correct and play nice by not using words like Fascism. After all, this current administration is taking over most everything in sight. Sort of fits your definition. Wish we hadn't been so politically correct over the incident at Fort Hood - maybe 13 souls would have been saved. Pull your Socialist head out of the sand and try a dose of reality for a change. Geez.

Hey freak, chill out. This blog is for those who UNDERSTAND that there is no difference between the two parties in American political system – they are both corrupt and sold-outs. The reason people scream here about Fascism is because it gains power under Obama. There is a slight difference between Fascism and National Socialism. The first one started in Italy, the last one in Germany. But both have similar properties, namely totalitarian government working in cahoots with military-industrial complex and large monopolies. This is exactly what this country is becoming right in front of our eyes.
So, stop posting idiotic messages. Either go and study the history, or kiss Obama’s ass if it’s more pleasing.

  7. 4:46, so you're saying they can afford food, but they're choosing not to buy the "right," i.e. healthy food? Whose fault is that, exactly?

  9. I worked with kids in public high schools that were near starving. Read the latest Mother Jones Article about what is going on in Cali... serious hunger issues. And I for one went with out food for weeks as a child during the 70's engineered recession. They closed the oil fields down in the SW NM basin and they were capping full wells to hoard, they closed down all the Potash mines still full of potash to hoard and use up the Saudi oil and the Canadian Potash. My father a mine mechanic got a job after that shoveling chicken feces, and we were dirt poor. Trust me there are plenty of hungry children in this country right now and wait till those unemployment benefits run out.

  11. 7:22, if there are children in schools who are "near starving," then they need to go to their mother and father and request to be fed, pronto. Wait, they don't have a mother and father, or their single mom is too poor to buy food? Then that falls under the category of Don't Breed 'Em if You Can't Feed 'Em.
I just have no patience for these people who spawn throw-away kids.

  16. That's funny, I don't feel nuts, 9:59. Do yourself a favor and head down to the nearest juvenile court. You'll find throw away kids aplenty, and their confused, beleaguered moms. Not many dads around, though. Funny, that.

  18. Abortion was created by God (creator of all things). He gave man choice whether or not to procreate souls, for pro-creation means to create in place of. God has no time to worry about abortion; he is too busy getting it on himself.

Those out of work; pack your bags and get moving to other cities for work; we did it 27 years ago in the 80's recession, so get moving now! We got jobs fixing/repairing air cond/heat pumps. I had a used furniture bizz..Get crackin folks!! Build up your SS/IRA... retirement is sooner than you think...I'm there now! Laura Ann

  28. Not to worry.
Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity will lead America into a new golden age after they take America back from the evil commie libs that hate America and Jesus.
Listen to these great men because they have all the answers and the Heritage Foundation to back up everything they say.
    People starving in America?
That's not possible because there should be more than enough evangelical Christians to feed people by manifesting food from one loaf of bread and a fish.
    God will provide.
I'd hate to think that their God would let them down in a crisis.
And God bless our trooper boys for fighting to keep U.S. banking profits and bonuses secure and growing.

Judge not that ye be not judged for what judgement ye judge sahll be metted out unto you. Repent and love one another or pay the price of your wicked ways. If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear. Fear causes anger, anger rushes to judgement, judgement causes pride, and pride goeth before the fall... and the fall shall be exceedingly great thereof.

  32. Well, there are people in our country that are going hungry. I for one only eat 1 meal a day and so does my husband. He gets his coffee and donuts in the morning on his way to work.

I drink coffee or water all day long to curb my appetite.

This evening i made a crockpot full of stew made with pork instead of stew meat. Stew meat is to expensive to by. You get pork on sale for .99 a pound and we buy about 30 lbs. and freeze it.

We can't afford to buy broccoli, squash or caul.
We dont buy fresh fruit because the price is way to high. So we don't eat fruit. Last thing i remember eating was a good watermelon a friend gave to us about a month ago.

So there are children in our own country that go to bed hungry with their tummies cramping. Don't you dare tell me there are no hungry people in America.

  33. If I were you I would consider cutting out internet access and whatever other per month luxuries you can. If you cant afford a dollar extra a day for some cheap veggies, the internet is not worth it. Consider growing a small garden near your house or foraging nearby to get some food. Times is tough. I wish you luck.

  34. For dumb butt who said retirees draw checks and dont work: we worked all our lives and saved up in our 401ks and savings; it's not a free handout like welfare! It's money we saved and invested for retirement, incl paying into SS. For others, work pt time and use the money to buy food (veggies, produce-- frozen is cheaper) Don't have kids if you can't afford it. Laura Ann
