Retailers in Big Trouble: Nobody Spending on Black Friday

American consumers shopped more for bargains at the start of the U.S. holiday season and spent significantly less than a year ago, according to early data released on Sunday.

Consumers said they will have spent nearly 8 percent less on average, or about $343 per person, over the weekend that includes U.S. Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and runs through Sunday, according to the National Retail Federation.

While traffic to stores and retail websites rose to 195 million people from 172 million in 2008, the early data this weekend represents a worrisome sign for retailers, who had braced for weak sales and sought ways to protect margins.

Data released by ShopperTrak on Saturday showed that sales rose a scant 0.5 percent on Black Friday, which is often the single busiest day of the holiday shopping season.

  1. Target was dead. I do mean dead. I was among maybe 20 people there.

  2. WalMart store in Waco on I-35 was full of people but their baskets were empty - 1 or 2 items at most. People were there but spending wasn't.

  3. Sam's Club - no lines, no crowds, no waiting on Friday. Today was different but nothing out of the ordinary.

I plan to go light on gifts this year and I don't know anyone that is going to go heavy on spending this year.

    So much bad news.

  4. I spent but only on the very cheap stuff, like 32 inch tv for 248. I didn't buy a ton of stuff, but I did buy big ticket items that where 50% or more off. Walmart was busy, kmart was not, and after the sales hours, it was quiet, ONLY real shoppers where out at 5 am to get the deals.

  7. If people are not spending with their fake money (credit cards) it won't be much longer before the house of cards comes a falling down. The facade of spending/consuming as being a good thing is crumbling.

  8. I want the fake economy to keep going on and on as long as possible.

The corporate media is failing to convince the sheep that all is fine.

  9. Daughter said Target was busy on Friday, but not like last year, also not too busy on Sat & Sun., I went to the other shopping area in town and Wally World was busy, but most were only doing the heavy sales items. The grocer was busier with it's sales. Starving the beast is the word this year!

  13. I did not go shopping at all. My relatives are going to greatly reduce their buying. They are buying one gift no more than $20 and having a name drawing for gift sharing.

  17. Yeah the walkers are extra cheap right now. Even the premium chicks (like hot classy ones still willing to swallow and do anal) are about 1/2 price right now, and still clearly not as busy as normal.

Our great moral Christian nation is clearly doomed!

  18. Here in Las Vegas you can get a walker that is like a 9, super hot for next to nothing, some hookers that are young will do you just so they can get high.

  19. I am gonna have a hooker every day until 2012. I figure with the gold I have now, when precious metals skyrocket, I will be banging all the hottest bitches until Jesus shows up and takes me away to heaven. Amen.
