Shocking: High School Grads Twice As Likely To Be Jobless Than College Grads

The economic meltdown has hit non-college grads much harder than the educated. And conservatives are very good at exploiting their anger and unease. Tools
You know how bad the economy is, right? Maybe your 401(k) has tanked. Perhaps you were out of work for a few months. You could have a mortgage under water. Or your health insurance has an impossibly high deductible. Yeah, we're all singing the blues.

I've gotten out my violin to play a mournful accompaniment to our collective angst.

Wait, what's that I hear in the distance? A dissonant, thundering chord someone just hammered on the piano -- a harsh interruption of my languid dirge. Now it repeats, getting louder and nearer.

It's the sound of rage, of people I don't know -- millions of them -- unable to make rent or feed their families. Why don't I know them? They don't have college degrees, and nearly everybody I know does.

The truth is, brothers and sisters, however much we the degreed are suffering, we don't know the half of it. And unless we familiarize ourselves with the other half very, very soon, what was supposed to be a new progressive era could quickly give way to the rage of the Tea Party.

  1. As a member of the under educated and apparently unwashed masses I have to say that it looks like an education does not necessarily make one smart. I’m amazed that so many of the “educated” never seemed to learn anything about real life and how the world works. While he seems to be exceptionally adroit at praising his own exceptionality, the author is oblivious to the fact that all of the blue collar jobs that have been lost will eventually lead to the loss of a goodly number of white collar jobs, too.

While the intelligentsia on both sides of the political spectrum are intent on pushing for advantage they are missing the most salient point of the debate; the economic ship is going down and they need to put on their life jackets. We uneducated bumpkins see it, feel it and know it. While the educated are using their diplomas to wipe their asses we’ll have a nice supply of Charmin set aside.

The new generation of the never-employed won't do shit. They'll take their monthly checks, live in subsidized apartments, and settle down on the couch for a lifetime of watching daytime TV.

  5. Please don't post any more articles from the self important liberal "progressives" (we all know there's nothing progressive about progressivism) at Alternet. This guy's writing is filled with elitist snobbery, made me want to puke.

  7. Why do the elitist snobs always accuse the "uneducated" of being racist? Most of the racists I know are college educated. It's the elite who look down on everyone who is not like themselves. It's the elite who have promoted eugenics in the past and probably will again eventually.

  8. Why is it my fatherinlaw had an eigth grade education and ended up with his own electrical biz? Both my bro got lousy grades and ended up working for Lockheed and selling cars; one was a plumber. These slackers need to learn a trade and the need in repair work is great. Hubby did HVAC work and retired from civil service..Auto repair, Electrician, etc learned at trade schools was popular in the 60's on and still is; so get with it folks! Laura

  9. It is amazing to actually witness the early effects of the Rothchild Formula actually working its way through America. When America fractures into five warring regions (maybe more?) the banksters will lend to all sides and take their war profits in the form of eternal interest payments on the war debt. Banksters will be very successful in their plans to weaken, dismantle, and liquidate the United States at enormous profit.

  10. Thinking about my experience working with college grads for the past 15 years, some of the most incompetent, dishonest, ignorant, rude, non caring, self centered idiots I have ever been around.

I would hate to think how ignorant or stupid (?) the high school grads are now? The most recent grads are the one's who can NOT find the Pacific Ocean on a globe, or find Iraq or England on a map?

And these kids will be doing what?
    Flipping burgers
    Enlisting in the military
    Working retail
    Delivering pizza

What an exciting future for the good ole USofA!
