Merry Christmas We are Screwed: Depression Worse Than The 1930's Coming

ShadowStats.com founder John Williams explains the risk of hyperinflation. Worst-case scenario? Rioting in the streets and devolution to a bartering system.
Do you believe everything the government tells you? Economist and statistician John Williams sure doesn't. Williams, who has consulted for individuals and Fortune 500 companies, now uncovers the truth behind the U.S. government's economic numbers on his Web site at ShadowStats.com. Williams says, over the last several decades, the feds have been infusing their data with optimistic biases to make the economy seem far rosier than it really is. His site reruns the numbers using the original methodology. What he found was not good.

Maymin: So we are technically bankrupt?

Williams: Yes, and when countries are in that state, what they usually do is rev up the printing presses and print the money they need to meet their obligations. And that creates inflation, hyperinflation, and makes the currency worthless.

Obama says America will go bankrupt if Congress doesn't pass the health care bill.

Well, it's going to go bankrupt if they do pass the health care bill, too, but at least he's thinking about it. He talks about it publicly, which is one thing prior administrations refused to do. Give him credit for that. But what he's setting up with this health care system will just accelerate the process.

Where are we right now?

In terms of the GDP, we are about halfway to depression level. If you look at retail sales, industrial production, we are already well into depressionary. If you look at things such as the housing industry, the new orders for durable goods we are in Great Depression territory. If we have hyperinflation, which I see coming not too far down the road, that would be so disruptive to our system that it would result in the cessation of many levels of normal economic commerce, and that would throw us into a great depression, and one worse than was seen in the 1930s.

  2. Dude, you keep harping about the coming great depression. But it hasn't happened yet. So keep telling us the world is going to shit while the rest of us live our lives.

  3. Hey Dude, I live my life, but I do it while preparing for what is to come, when idiots like you come to me for help you will get lead, nothing else, I have already told my family and friends, they are like you and will go down like sheeple when this hits, only 1% are prepared, those will make it, the rest will have much trouble.

  4. I think it is very concerning that John Williams is saying what he is saying. I think he is a by the numbers type of guy and the numbers are not good.

Other countries know that they will go down with the Dollar but sooner or later it will be everyone for themself.

The unemployment and States losing tax revenue feeding further commercial real estate problems will reach a point when the dominoes start falling in all directions at the same time.

You may need more than food and financial preparation for what lies ahead. I am not going to spell it out for you ... you need to do determine things for yourself ... better get your inner guidance system working now.

  5. This is a good site for preparation info: http://www.survivalblog.com

They're about as prepared as you can possibly get! Most of us can't or don't want to go to that extreme, but at least they are thorough and think of pretty much everything you may possibly need. They have a lot of info for beginners as well.

Most of you may know about Ferfal's site: http://ferfal.blogspot.com
He lives in Argentina and writes about what it's like there after their economic crash in 2001, and what they do to survive.

  6. 3:25 Yes, I read on the Argentina crash; most had to watch their house day and night, etc. Everyone: Best not to tell friends, neighbors, and some family/relatives what you're doing, as one lady told me a year ago, do this quietly don't even tell your kids/teens either..if they tell their friends, they tell others; trust no one, not even fellow church folks! Celente and Roubini are highly respected trends researchers, are interviewed on various news shows; google them in. McIlvany gives out free info too..he says to sell/ eliminate all unnecessary "toys" and other "stuff" pare down, simplify and do the general preps. Retail sales data may be worse than the durable goods data..we'll know next month.

  7. I have a family of 3. My goal is to have a 1 year supply of food stored. 100 gal of water is not enough and too heavy to move.

No one outside of my family, mother, brothers, nephews and such are prepared to survive even 3 days. When they see my stockpile, I tell them it's for the aftermath of the next big earthquake. It's not really a lie, but if I told them I'm preparing for the coming fall of the country, with streets fighting and looting and social unrest going on... they would think I nutz, but then I don't watch TV, to soak in the propaganda.

  12. Things don't look so great, shit they look so bad its hard to know how far things will fall. I agree that even talking about what is coming with members of the herd seems ALMOST useless, but not completely. I talk with a coworker about a lot of the stuff coming our way and he has begun to hear what I'm saying(he's been on a full dose of newpaper and Television his entire life without ANY other information sources-which is sad). Years of gov't and corporate propaganda can be hard to break. Propaganda and misinfo builds structures that are hard to tear down even after that person has glimpsed over the big wall of lies. They still rebut my discussion of collapse with things like, "Well, that's why we've got FDIC",and with a degree of satisfaction that is frightening. This system has roared along for so long that many find it IMPOSSIBLE (and hardly self-serving enough) to believe that it could crash or grind to a halt. In Baton Rouge things aren't nearly as bad as they are elsewhere and for now I'm glad. Not sure what awaits us, so must remain vigilant.

  13. To the DUMB ASSES who post stupid comments here, I am sure there are other blogs you can go to, like maybe a transvestite blog? You could even photocopy your ass and post in there.

Meanwhile, for those of living in reality and know what is going on, this article merely confirms what many of us have known for years.

Prepare now, in one week, it will be 2010. Look for false flag terror attacks coming as well as gun confiscation.

We may need lots and lots of ammo.

    Merry Christmas!

  14. LOL, I hope you are preparing your private army as we speak. Just how much ammo does you need? No you are not a dumb ass, just prepared.

  15. The Arrow Trucking story below is indicative of what John Williams at ShadowStats.com is saying.

Arrow Trucking is not some small trucking outfit it is big and 400 truckers were laid off when they went bankrupt.

Arrow Trucking has 75% of its business hauling US Military ammunition, supplies, and equipment.

The compamy was withholding the true state of the company to its employees all the way to the end.

What happened to Arrow Trucking maybe happening to many many other companies in 2010. So many of you may be next to be laid off in the same way.

  16. Thats how layoffs usually happen. Companies try to extend the business as long as they can without losing employees before they want them to leave. Not nice for the employees, good for their business $. And yes there will be many more job losses continuing as in 2009.

  17. I am more than ever convinced that we are just being slowly killed. There will be no SHTF day or another Black Tuesday or anything so dramatic.

Just a slow death that started in 2007 up to the present. It will continue forward. Less chance of revolt in large numbers and the like. That is what the Oligarchs want.

  18. I expect more of the same in 2010. Just a continual downward slide into financial hell.

  19. Act I: Recession to deflation to Depression.
Act II: Roll out the printing presses to hyperinflation where it takes a wheelbarrow to buy a loaf of bread to currency collapse.
Act II: We are "SAVED" by the issuance of a new fiat currency, the Amero or Global world currency "backed" by IMF "drawing rights.", paving the way for the Global New World Order.

  20. Like California, the government in AZ is in meltdown mode with revenues down 40% from 3 years ago. Here is the desperate plea for help from our Governor:

  21. My wife's family has a bunch of 20 somethings girls. Every coversation is about fashion, shoes, hair, nails, clubbing, etc...

During the family gift exchange, one of them actually shed tears over a Sephora gift card she received.

All were big Obama supporters during the elections and now don't pay a bit of attention to what is going on. They don't have the slightest clue as to what is coming their way in the near future.

I almost feel bad for them. Their lives are based on nothing.

  22. I know people in their 40s that think like that which is even more sad.

  23. The one thing that scares me most is what will happen to Social Security, which is my main income. If it's cut back, remains stagnant, or if we have hyper-inflation, I cannot possibly pay my bills. I will lose my house. I have cut back on spending and everything I own is from thrift shops and yard sales. Only two rooms of the house are heated--can't afford any more than that. Is this the future we all look forward to?
