Kansas City Broke: Closing 50% of The Schools

The Kansas City Missouri School Board voted Wednesday night to shutter nearly half of its schools in an effort to avoid going broke. The action closes 28 of 58 campuses and eliminates about 700 of the district's 3,300 jobs, including 285 teachers."None of us like doing this but it was necessary, it had to be done," said board member Arthur Benson after a tense five to four vote that was interrupted several times by upset parents.
The plan comes as school districts around the country, battered by the recession and budget cutbacks, are closing facilities to save money..

  1. Noodles123-Just like Cali...Too many bloodsuckers and people who don't contribute or pay property taxes complaining that their kids aren't getting what they're used to even though they've never kicked in.

I feel bad for the middle class in KC.

  2. Even though the above post is right, still in perspective one day of war in Iraq and Afghanistan could have probably paid for a year of school. Here is the change you voted for.

  3. Yep. Murder and occupations first, education way down the list.

  4. In KC we had a massive exodus causing enrollment to go down. Families were replaced by empty homes and apartments, gay couples and single home buyers because of poor schools. In mass Inner City families moved out to safer and better neighborhoods located in Kansas City, KS and Raytown, MO. They moved for 2 reasons. 1. Housing in those two cities was still affordable and loans were given out to buy homes with 0 down and fudged paperwork. 2. The Kansas City, MO. school district is no longer accredited. Their schools are broken. The teachers are members of the school board and they will not do what needs to be done to fix it. They have gone through one Superintendent after another, firing them faster than an M16.

The only fix would be to loose all of the loser teachers on the school board and replace them all with some of the local business leaders in KC. This whole mess could have been turned around in 18 mos. The teachers would have hated them, but I no longer respect the opinion of the KC MO school teachers.

That WAS the problem, now it is all about money. Their is not enough revenue students to sustain so many students.

  5. Education is always the easy target...lets face it..most kids have access to a TV so what do you need schools for... dumbing down kids makes goverment life so much easier.... people dont ask reasonable questions like

what happened to the economic stimulus package money that in 12 months has seen the economy go further down the toilet.

what happened to all the promises made by Obama about change...

what happens to all the money collected as federal income tax.

why does the government not control money circulation and why is there no longer a 100% gold backed system to money issuance...

yes these and many other such questions will no longer be asked by younger generations as they now can rely on government propaganda to satisfy all their educational needs

  6. 2:52 You didn't really say " families were replaced with " all that stuff" say it ain't so!

    Thank you for the truth.

Last nite on fox I watched in amazement at the politics of the education board of Texas deciding what will and what will not go into our childrens text books.

When latinos who are teachers who are also on the board stand up and start telling us that Hispanic history in this country is more important that George Washington and the meaning of Christmas --- I know -----

We're not going down; we're already halfway there

  7. 5:12 My sister and her husband teach in south Texas. Our country is over 200 years old. I can see that getting all the history in could create debate. What about England. How does an ancient country like that get all the history in for their 7th graders. I would suggest that we must not remove anything that teaches the founding and the discovery of our country, and other subjects commonly found in a 50 year old text book. We should add a paragraph about illegal immigration from mexico, border patrol and the costs to the states and federal governments. We should include the rise in radical Muslim beliefs, their hatred of Americans and their continued attacks beginning with 911.

We should include in text books about society information about Mexican American culture, Mexican drug cartels spilling violence over our borders, the Mexican American illegal drug business, the hardship of border schools and hospitals as they try to educated poor illegal immigrants.

  8. We should also include in the text books, why w bush left the borders open after he igonored warnings of 911, making it easier for his business buddies to make money off cheap mexican labor, and why cheney made his former comapny billions of dollars by giving them no bid contracts in iraq, and why they helped to ship our entire manufacturing base overseas, basically allowing the usa to turn into a 3rd world cesspool.

  9. We need these kids kept stupid, if they are smart enough to see what the baby boom generation has done to this country then there will be a lot of old folks looking at some very violent deaths.

  10. We need everyone stupid so that right wing jesus freaks can keep everyone in the dark and help tptb to keep on raping and stealing from the usa and turn us into a 3rd world country, which they are well on the way to doing

  11. Something to think about
    We are in trouble...

The population of this country is 300 million.
    160 million are retired.
That leaves 140 million to do the work.
There are 85 million in school.
Which leaves 55 million to do the work.
Of this there are 35 million employed by the federal government.
Leaving 20 million to do the work.
2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied
    with killing Osama Bin-Laden.
Which leaves 17.2 million to do the work.
Take from that total the 15.8 million people who work for state and city Governments. And that
leaves 1.4 million to do the work.
At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals.
Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.
That leaves just two people to do the work.
    You and me.
    And there you are,
    Sitting on your hinder,
    At your computer, reading jokes..
    Nice. Real nice

  12. Anonymous 10:52 - everyone pays property taxes. Even renters pay property taxes. A landlord that doesn't include his property tax payments into the rent she charges won't be a landlord for long.

If you want to pity someone, pity the people who have no kids in school and still have to kick in for it. Or the people, like me, who never supported Iraqmire and still has to pay for it.

  13. In warfare, defeat goes to the side that goes bankrupt first. No money means no soldiers, no weapons, no deployments.

Fact: The United States is bankrupt.

    Thus, The "terrorists" have won.

Assuming, of course, these "terrorists" even exist at all. (Other than the ones created by the CIA to fight the USSR - i.e. Bin Laden, et al.) Because a nation that can hallucinate wealth into existance can also hallucinate enemies to fight.

The real enemies are domestic, hidden in plain sight.

  14. 1055 is 100% correct, no terrorists unless you count the ones in the usa govt the Al Cia Da!

  15. I used to have to drive the loop around KC quite often. The 435. Coming in south off old US 71 up to and around the airport.
I had a severe case of white knuckles every time. People on that highway had blood in their eyes. Would gladly run you off the road.
I would begin to get an upset stomach about 20 miles away. I finally found another way around which took me an extra hour or so, but it was worth it. Once, I got off the 435 at a wrong exit by mistake and into the "gas light district" and worse, at night.
I don't blame the folks that left that place!!

  16. 700 of the jobs is only 268 teachers? less than half. Get rid of everyone who does not have direct student contact. Pay the teachers the most salary; everyone else makes 10K less. You'll see fewer administrators (and good riddance).

  17. FACT: NEA loves it that our local school district employs 2 full time "Student Advocates" per grade (in addition to the guidance counselors).... MORE $$ union dues for them.... Load the schools up with as many high paying positions as possible. Those are the folks who will go to extreme lengths to protect those cherry jobs and golden retirement packages.... Teaching used to be a noble profession. It is now no more than the middle class lottery strike it rich profession, where do-nothing, selfish and greedy persons go to suck us dry... all " for the children's sake "....
    cry me a freekin river.
see ya on the unemployment line teach.
I'm the one you been picking the pockets of
    for years now.
    paybax a biatch....

  18. History began and ends with amerika for amerikans. As a foreigner i can see that clearly .
How amerika got control of California Texas and half of amerika and set its borders is of no importance to amerikans..
Those other people and their descendents from round there, born in the USA or not ,appear as foreigners and are now called ‘Hispanics” out of political correctness.
And are clearly unreasonably seeking to take avantage and steal the Californians good jobs wages and conditions by illegally crossing the borders set by the new owners of California and Texas .
But guns goons and gold and race rules o.k. and determines borders , power, slavery or which “race” gets paid what levels of wages and who cleans the toilets. Even in sex and cultural matters and that’s the amerikan way.

But, I got gold and …

“ I’m going to Kansas city, Kansas city here I come,
Cause , they got a lot of pretty women there
and I am gonna get me some” .

Black or white they are all getting poorer now and even the old so called dumbed down “White trash” will be even less educated and gold rules O.K?
Isn’t that the traditional amerikan way ,money rules , and power in sexual matters -the cash nexus and "free enterprise".
The worry for the white amerikan racists here on this website is whether I might be “Hispanic” or Black. Life sure is a worry if you’re a racist and now on the wrong end of the stick .. But, anyway..
    Kansas city here I come.

  19. I moved from Colorado to KC, Missouri to help out a family member. After being here almost a year and a half, it is extraordinary how negative this area is - and apathetic - and how easily manipulated. There is zero sense of affluence, crime is through the roof, poor people with their hands perpetually out, poor attitudes, poor lifestyles, poor answers and people just accept it. The city leaders need to give back all their pay from over the years of poor management of this place. What a pathetic mess. KCMO is only to be seen in the rear view mirror.
