Nevada: Depression Unemployment Numbers

Nevada now has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. The official numbers come out tomorrow, but News 4 has learned that the statewide jobless rate will reach 14 percent for May.

That surpasses Michigan, which had held the number one spot until this week, when its unemployment rate dipped to around 13.5 percent.

With most of the Silver State's population living in Clark County, it is likely that southern Nevada's unemployment rate will also set another record when the official numbers are released Friday from the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

The numbers reflect the continued collapse of construction employment, and continued layoffs by government, small businesses and resorts.

"Our economy is very heavily dependent upon tourism," said UNLV Department of Economics' Stephen Miller. "And the current recession, the drivers for the recession, were leisure and hospitality, finance and insurance and real estate, and construction. And we know we're big players in at least two of those markets. That's why the recession has been so severe, unlike previous recessions in Nevada."

  1. Las Vegas casinos are literally dead at 3am in the morning. Five years ago you could go into one and swear it was 3pm.

All those billion dollar projects, especially City Center, down the tubes.

  14. Even though people have described what was happening with certain things becoming bankrupt and ruined like GM and Vegas it was still unbelievable, the mentality was still there that, "Oh well, so what they'll just get money from somewhere else? These places can never fail. America could never have this..."

Oh wow, it really is happening isn't it?

  15. At least a third of the people here can't find a job, any job. Usual fake numbers.

  16. 11:11 looked at your link. Those people are heroes for trying to help clean up the beach but they are exposing themselves to chemicals that may end up killing them.

They are making the mistake of listening to our liar government about how safe the beaches are there.

Nine years ago other heroes, 9/11 responders did the same thing. Trusted the scum at the EPA and helped in the cleanup. Many or most are cancer ridden or dead right now. The government would do shit for them, won't admit they are liars, they just let them suffer and die. That is the government way.

These people, are unselfish as they are, do not really know the risks they are taking on their health.

Between now and November we may have some nasty hurricanes.

These people need to get the hell away from that area. I know that is easier said then done, but it is better to give up your home then be killed in a gruesome death.

I sure how the best for those people, but this is no time to be a hero, the costs are way to high and the scum EPA is lying again.

  17. Nine years ago it was so toxic for them because they were breathing thermite dust. So sad.

  18. We are starting to see foreclosures here in British Columbia....say the property (townhouse) has an assessed value of $144,000 there were offers of $119,000 and $130,000 and the banks up here still said no. They seem to want the full assessed value. Crazy times are upon us. My prediction we ain't seen nothing yet 2011 and 2012 are going to get worse. Deflation until the end of this year 2010. Then all hell is going to break out gas is going to go throw the roof along with groceries. The consumer is so stretched....

  22. Vegas dead is a step in the right direction to a proper recovery. Vegas was an abomination and a sad example and symbol of Amurica. Remember the Atomic Bomb Testing Parties? Good Riddance to that hell hole. Never visited it.....but maybe I will when it becomes a ghost town.

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, we shouldn't honor soldiers. Sociologically speaking, if you honor soldiers, you only help create more willing soldiers by rewarding murder.....and let's face it, that's all war is these days....in fact, it's all it ever was, really.....MURDER.

  25. 5:12 : That's not going to happen and you know it. Go away to die somewhere like all the useless unemployed.

Let the productive businesses continue making profits and making this nation strong again.

It's for the better of this nation.

  26. 3:27- I second that....just wait until the commie pinko Libs. get this bloody HST going, you are gonna see every third business go under and forget about starting up any small business-BC is going broke folks- if it were not for the HUGE amounts of cash the Chinese are investing into Van. real estate it too would be another Las Vegas. Besides, the bastards have to find some way to pay for that half billion dollar roof-while the homeless still remain homeless.

    ReplyDelete
  27. every third business now is closed, in a mall in vegas, there were 20 stores two years ago, today that mall has only 4 stores open, it is over already and we can thank those nazi, commie conservabots for that, they have ruined everything here in con vegas.

  28. What's over? Idiots giving their life savings to Casinos for a toxic buffet lunch? How's that being over a bad thing?

Vegas was an example of everything that was wrong with the U.S. It was a Microcosm. It was a Ponzi Scheme. It was a rigged game that was always doomed to failure.....and you some how want to revive that?

You need a rubber room....you're a danger to yourself and others with such insanity.

  29. As lousy as Harry Reid is, why would you want Sharron Angle? I understand she wants to prohibit gambling and drinking. That used to be on her website, but now that she's running against Reid, her previous stance no longer appears on her website.

Sorry, but the crazy Republicans will be worse than the spineless Democrats.

I understand the South's reluctance to give up oil drilling even though it's destroying them. Too many people depend on oil for jobs and sales. But is selling out your kids' future worth it? And don't forget, when the oceans die, the rest of us may not survive. I've seen predicted animations of the oil flow: it's going to go up the entire East coast next and then into the Atlantic. Goodbye seafood.

  30. 653 the stock market is the worst rigged casino in the world and its greed will bring down the entire world, who would gamble like that, ONLY A MORON!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. 7:39 and just like a gambler coming home from a casino, the few people that come out ahead in the stock market blab to everyone they know, but the losers clam up.

9 out of 10 'average guys' lose.

The only sure winners in the stock market are the cheaters you run the crap table. The Goldman Sachs, etc. The ones that are so rich they can buy themselves a Presidential sock puppet.

  32. Nobody here should be suprised on how stupid the average person is. The dumbest person I ever met had 2 masters degrees. It seems the higher the diploma, the dumber they get. They believe anything and blame everyone when they screw up.
