When the Fukushima Meltdown Hits Groundwater

Fukushima is going to dwarf Chenobyl. The Japanese government has had a level 7 nuclear disaster going for almost a week but won’t admit it.
The disaster is occurring the opposite way than Chernobyl, which exploded and stopped the reaction. At Fukushima, the reactions are getting worse. I suspect three nuclear piles are in meltdown and we will probably get some of it.
If reactor 3 is in meltdown,  the concrete under the containment looks like lava. But Fukushima is not far off the water table. When that molten mass of self-sustaining nuclear material gets to the water table it won’t simply cool down. It will explode – not a nuclear explosion, but probably enough to involve the rest of the reactors and fuel rods at the facility.
Pouring concrete on a critical reactor makes no sense – it will simply explode and release more radioactive particulate matter. The concrete will melt and the problem will get worse. Chernobyl was different – a critical reactor exploded and stopped the reaction. At Fukushima, the reactor cores are still melting down. The ONLY way to stop that is to detonate a ~10 kiloton fission device inside each reactor containment vessel and hope to vaporize the cores. That’s probably a bad solution.
A nuclear meltdown is a self-sustaining reaction. Nothing can stop it except stopping the reaction. And that would require a nuclear weapon. In fact, it would require one in each containment vessel to merely stop what is going on now. But it will be messy.

  1. Japan, like the US (and the West in general) is screwed....

  2. Nothing will happen. Only good news will be reported as long as Obama is president.

If it isn't reported it never happened.

  3. good mention of what those who believe the MSM should keep in mind when told that a dousing of water will solve the problem, a self sustaining reaction, until the life span of that reaction slows and is done, energy expelled. Water is meant to prohibit the starting of a reaction, not after it's already started. remember all that molten steel at ground zero, after days of fire hoses, those firemen knew it was a chemical process, thermite has a sustaining reaction until it's energy/reaction is spent. this much worse then thermite. seems with the dumping of water they create the very source for a steam cloud which full of radioactive particulates wafts skyward and circles the globe...so stop creating steam clouds huh. no easy/cheap/quick fix. also stop spending some 500 billion holding up the yen and nikkei markets and get some bottles of water with the money-for the people

  4. the fuel will not fission without water as a medium. Borated water stops fission. As time goes by the decay heat will become less. Expensive you bet, Is the world screwed not even close.

  5. If Japan is a volcanic island, I want to know what would happen if there is a meltdown and and it continues to move down into a magma chamber. What would be the result of this. Maybe it could be the best thing that could happen or maybe it could cause another conduit pipe to be made, maybe causing another disater of a volcano erupting. Just curious if this could happen.

  6. It will most likely be contained by the surrounding subterrain rock. Yes, it will be radioactive for hundreds of years and the immediate vecinity will be uninhabitable but it won't be as bad as everyone thinks. Thank you.

  7. 3:40-WRONGO! Nothing-NOTHING stops fission. Borated water or otherwise is still only a coolant, basically, the only thing that MAY stop it would be an ultra quick nuclear explosion to disrupt the "chaining" thereby stopping the continuity. Kind of like Red Adair snuffing out an oilfield fire with a very carefully prepared explosive charge. Listen, this asshole technology is going to kill us all- for the simple reason that there is not one individual alive today who knows what the hell they are doing! Rush,rush-greed,greed-the frikkin dishonest money junkies are in charge. Love it or hate it-it`s the truth!

  8. "Borated water or otherwise is still only a coolant,"

Is absolutely wrong. Boron is a Fission poison as it absorbs free neutrons, and prevents them from continuing the chain reaction. In the event of a run-way reactor where the control rods can't be inserted, the standard operating procedure is to flood the reactor with boric acid. However this is not desired under normal conditions because it turns the reactor permanently into scrap.

"the fuel will not fission without water as a medium"

Only at low to moderate temperatures. If the fuel is very hot the neutron cross-section rises because of the doppler-broading effect. This is especially a problem with Plutonium fueled reactors which already have a much larger cross section than Uranium.

During the Chernobyl crisis they dropped borated sand on the reactor. Boron will get mixed in with the fuel core poising it. and forcing the reaction to drop below criticality.

  9. I wonder if the atomic piles become hotter and hotter as they liquify, and each pill of pile burns off the buffering elements, and the controll rods.I wonder if they in fact do not explode like chernoble, but vaporize like steel as it becomes so hot under a cutting torch that is turns to vaporized metal instead of liquid metal? If this is the case then the world is in for massive amounts of radioactive gases, for how ever long it takes for the entire mass of the pile to convert themself from sold to gas.

  10. It's remarkable to see that your The Student Loan People should transcend the ordinary without relying solely on written content. Alex Tresniowski relates 21 inspiring experiences of ordinary folks and then shows exactly how anyone can make the product choices that they do, it will also be fulfilled. There are two issues here: the student loan people to kids. It proved so popular that there are huge differences between e-The Student Loan People and traditional The Student Loan People. However, you can find success and drive your business, but they don't act alone.
