Collapse of the American Empire: Swift, Silent, Certain

"One of the disturbing facts of history is that so many civilizations collapse," warns anthropologist Jared Diamond in Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. Many "civilizations share a sharp curve of decline. Indeed, a society's demise may begin only a decade or two after it reaches its peak population, wealth and power."

Now, Harvard's Niall Ferguson, one of the world's leading financial historians, echoes Diamond's warning: "Imperial collapse may come much more suddenly than many historians imagine. A combination of fiscal deficits and military overstretch suggests that the United States may be the next empire on the precipice." Yes, America is on the edge.

Dismiss his warning at your peril. Everything you learned, everything you believe and everything driving our political leaders is based on a misleading, outdated theory of history. The American Empire is at the edge of a dangerous precipice, at risk of a sudden, rapid collapse.

Ferguson is brilliant, prolific and contrarian. His works include the recent Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World; The Cash Nexus: Money and Power in the Modern World; Colossus: The Rise and Fall of The American Empire; and The War of the World, a survey of the "savagery of the 20th century" where he highlights a profound "paradox that, though the 20th century was 'so bloody,' it was also 'a time of unparalleled progress.'"

  1. If the government would spend no more than it takes in, we as a nation would never fall.

I didn't have to go to college to figure this one out.

  2. 9:29 - I have to agree - Anyone who actually works for their money knows how to budget, otherwise your budget knows how to work you. no accountability in DC or at our State capitols.

I'll say it's 'unfortunate' (when I'm thinking they are 'paid elitist meat puppets') that our 'representatives' conduct themselves without honor or moral ethics.

  3. BTW - the irony is most politicians, who were schooled in a more classical education, are aware of the historical precedents of past empires and how they collapsed under their own gluttonous greedy adventures (no matter how justified - ie spreading democracy/freedom) to enrich their nation (um - I mean themselves and cohorts aka lobbyists today). They know what they are doing, even if they don't read the legislation they vote on!
They are Swine where most of us are Sheeple!

  4. How will the goons/disinfo agents/fake bloggers debunk this article? After all, it was written for publication for the CFR?

    Any questions on our future?

  5. Oh and here's a good one. So by now we all got our reminder in the mail, that we will get a Census form next week.

How many homes are there in the US? 100 million, 200 million?

    100 million envelopes
    100 million sheets of paper
    100 million printed notices
    100 million stamps or equivalent

I wonder who thought of this? Perhaps we could find out and beat the dog shit out him/her.

Can you think of a bigger waste of money?

  9. The Collapse of an Empire is absolutely certain just as death is certain for every living creature on Earth. However, most of you have got the Timing wrong for the collapse. What the US of A is experiencing right now is just a very small bump on the Road. The Roman Empire lasted for more than 1200 years and this is just the beginning for the US of A.

  12. I see all the hate in the post, no wonder we can’t find solutions. The number one reason we can’t build or make anything in this great country of ours, RED TAPE, UNIONS and TAXES. Simple. If we could have the government holds back on some of the red tape. Once upon I looked into building a simple product... after speaking with several business owners, I see why we can’t build anything any longer. As time continues I believe we will rebuild this country and come out better than before.

  14. 734 you are a simpleton, we will never rebuild and be better than before, we gave that away a long time ago when we shipped our manufacturing base overseas, it is over now and we will be in a great depression, the likes of which has never been seen before. Us citizens will not work for $1.00 an hour, but india, china and mexico will and that is why this country is finished for good

  15. The reason we are finished is because we have ceased to be a moral nation. We were blessed by God,and we shined on his rules starting in the 1960's. Now no more gold! Except for those who are listening to his words, and have the good sense to follow wisdom.

  16. Noodles123-Great a totally depressing DB and and an overly religious kook...Listen it will be bad but not as bad as you think...All we have to do is adapt...Only prob seems to be for Americans to understand they have to accept lower standards of living because:

    1. Most are not very well educated
    2. Service jobs are the first to die out
    3. We really don't have the drive we did before or pride in workmanship
    4. Too much bellyaching...Nothing worse than an obese, uneducated woman with 3 kids demanding either free things or not understanding that the good times are kaput

But what you forget is that art/music/lit will rise again...People will become less materialistic and feelings/passion/real politics/patriotism and self reliance will make a come back.

As for the religious aspect...I agree but shoving Jesus down people's throats and into every conversation makes you a douchbag and actually makes people NOT listen and ignore you.

There I'm done (Gets off soap box)

  18. “What the US of A is experiencing right now is just a very small bump on the Road. The Roman Empire lasted for more than 1200 years and this is just the beginning for the US of A.”
Wank .wank ,and the shopping malls are full and recovery is setting up the U.S. empire for another thousand just like “the thousand year Reich”Hope and change and Patriotic Act type talk we can we can believe in ! It case you didn’t notice as there was only 1200 years of history to observe here and you might be a bit slow on it, or blinded by ideological made in the USA rose glasses, there was once a a Roman Republic that lasted 500 or so years .
Until a turning point and Caesar And Augustus pensioned off the Republic for the Emperor Monarchy system. Then the Roman Empire degenerated into an Italy wide slave estate Monarchy flat on its back morally and economically bankrupt. That nobody including the slaves was prepared to fight for . Why bother! Even the old roman army was no more. Nobody wanted to fight for corruption of the monarchy except the Praetorian Guard the Blackstone type mercenaries of the day.In the end it was easily rolled over by the poor third world like Germans of the day.

Some bump !A dark age that lasted a thousand years in Western Europe .Meanwhile The ruling class and the Praetorian Guards had long since departed or fled italy and Rome and set up a second “Roman” empire in Constantinople that spoke Greek and turned Christian. Funny sort of Romans! Are you talking about the Roman Republic ,the “Roman Empire , The American Republic or or the current American Monarchy or the “Thousand Year Reich?
