Does anyone remember the “cakewalk war” that would last six weeks, cost $50-$60 billion, and be paid for out of Iraqi oil revenues?
Does anyone remember that White House economist Lawrence Lindsey was fired by Dubya because Lindsey estimated that the Iraq war could cost as much as $200 billion?
Lindsey was fired for over-estimating the cost of a war that, according to Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes, has cost 15 times more than Lindsey estimated. And the US still has 50,000 troops in Iraq.
Does anyone remember that just prior to the US invasion of Iraq, the US government declared victory over the Taliban in Afghanistan?
Does anyone remember that the reason Dubya gave for invading Iraq was Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction, weapons that the US government knew did not exist?
Are Americans aware that the same neoconservarives who made these fantastic mistakes, or told these fabulous lies, are still in control of the government in Washington?
The “war on terror” is now in its tenth year. What is it really all about?
The bottom line answer is that the “war on terror” is about creating real terrorists. The US government desperately needs real terrorists in order to justify its expansion of its wars against Muslim countries and to keep the American people sufficiently fearful that they continue to accept the police state that provides “security from terrorists,” but not from the government that has discarded civil liberties.

If you were paying attention you will also remember that in the runup to the Iraq war China, Russia, France, Germany and a handfull of other countries delayed the invasion using stalling tactics in the UN. There were numerous discoveries of Russia driving convoys of "WMD's" or who knows what into Syria. They flew many cargo planes into Iraq and removed WMD's. In fact during the invasion our army bumped into a convoy of Russian trucks protected by Russian Spetsnaz and our troops were told to back down and let them pass. Later the Russians claimed that they were Russian diplomats leaving the country LOL. So, yes many months after telegraphing our intent to invade and "find" the WMD's and after many months of Russia and Hezbola removing the WMD's lo and behold when we got there sure enough most of the WMD's were gone! Who would have thought...
ReplyDeleteInteresting, but you are putting Germany and France into the same camp as China and Russia, as if they all conspired together to protect Iraq's weapons, then later turned around only to contribute forces to the war against them? Believe it or not there were other, more sensible countries who did not want to get entangled in a meaningless war. We did know Saddam was building nukes. He had 550 tons of yellow cake uranium when we invaded. He had an enormous underground facility with one purpose only to enrich the uranium to weapons grade. This is fact. It was discovered during the invasion.

Some ,however are now seeking truth from facts, not from classical propaganda and religious paranoid story telling.
Russia and Chine were indeed the biggest suppliers to Saddam. They supplied the weapons, the raw materials for his WMD program, and Russia supplied the actual biological and chemical WMD's. France and Germany sold Saddam the advanced technical equipment used to weaponize the biological material and to manufacture the WMD's. France sold Saddam fighter jets and the associated weaponry.
ReplyDeleteThe Yellow cake uranium was not discovered by American forces it was discovered by a NGO group that went into Iraq. This group knew what it was and brought it to the attention of the military who first guarded it then removed it. It was kept quiet but not secret. The NGO originally talked about it because they actually thought it made the U.S. look bad since the material was openly available for anyone to walk away with. They even flagged down some news people following the invasion forces and showed them what they found. I can remember seeing it on TV and the blue barrels of yellow cake and the stuff spilled on the ground. In fact Iraqi citizens from the local town had dumped some of the drums of yellowcake out of the barrels so they could use the barrels for drinking water. After the NGO figured out that the discovery of the yellow cake didn't really embarrass the U.S. but in fact supported the contention that Saddam had a nuclear program they decided to say no more about it. But the information is available and in fact was on the TV.

The other news story of the night may have been Cheney "Outing" and destroying the carreer of CIA agent Valerie Plame, whose husband had investigated the yellow cake story -and spupidly- delivered the honest but "wrong "conclusion in wartime .
Amongst all the other Great American war stories.
Some say the first casualty of war is the truth as it gets lost in all the war propaganda.
