Burger King The Next Bankruptcy?

The Whopper is having a shocker. The world's second-largest hamburger chain, Burger King, is struggling to arrest a seemingly unstoppable erosion in sales and is under fire over an unimaginative menu, conflicts with franchisees and a "narrow philosophy" of sticking to flame-grilled meat sandwiches and fries.

The Miami-based multinational today trumpeted a 13% rise in quarterly profits to $50.2m (£31.7m). But Wall Street is worried about a dismal underlying trend – for the third consecutive quarter, like-for-like sales in Burger King's 12,078 restaurants were down with a drop of 2% globally and 3.3% in north America.

While its larger rival, McDonald's, has prospered from families "trading down" in the recession, Burger King has been floundering. Its customers, particularly in the US, tend to skew heavily towards poorer economic groups, including a large proportion of black or Hispanic diners, who have been hit particularly badly by unemployment. Burger King's shares have slumped by 19% over the last year, while McDonald's stock has surged by 12%.

  2. Every BK I've been in has been FILTHY. Can't say that about McDonalds.

  3. Oh please, McDonald's is just as dirty. At one McDonald's the kids were urinating in the pickle bucket.

And I heard that McDonald's is also not doing as well as we think they are.

    1. You hear wrong! When you drive by a McDs the lot if full, drive thru is busy. A BK nearby will have 2 cars in the drive thru and a couple cars parked. Most BKs are lucky to break 4.000 a day while most McDs do over 10.000.

  4. I went in this burger king in a heavily black neighborhood, and there was sandwitch wrappers and french fries all over the floors which obviously hadn't been mopped in months.

    Narssssttttyyyyy.

  5. Finally Americans are coming to their senses. Or are they? Well, here's to hoping that more of these crap restaurants go under. Captialism, only a wet dream.

  6. I would think that fast food places do better in bad times. It is cheaper to go buy that poison food than it is to make your own dinner from a grocery store.

Yes, it is foul, but regardless they usually do well in bad times.

  7. The movie FOOD INC really does a great job at explaining how fast food chains have changed all the rules of food, and not in a good way.

  8. If I ate their nasty greasy food I'd be 300 lbs. I don't know how people can fuel their bodies on that mess.

  9. mcdonalds sprays amonia on their burgers and their preservatives for french fries will kill you, it leads to organ failure, especially the liver, kidneys and heart

  10. I know. If that doesn't get you the aspartame tainted soda pop will do the job.

  11. 10:15 Any fast food outlet or public place in a heavily black neighbourhood would have filth over the floor and walls for that matter. Just they way they live, and no it's not racist saying that when it's fact.

  12. I refuse to buy BK. Their advertisement of the King who looks like a sick pedophile in some of the ads, and their filthy sexual innuendos won't get my dollar. I hope they go under. They are disgusting. They were great when the opened and Rosie Greer did their first commercial. Stay away from BK!

  13. They ALL suck, but the reason I dont go to BK is because they smother their hamburgers in ketsup and mustard. REALLY, the only reason I dont go is because they put on to much ketchup and mustard. Thats all. Change your condemint formula and SAVE that money at the same time.

  14. I went on Burger Kings website and they dont even have a toll free customer service line. They arent interested in what the customer thinks or wants. They could have saved millions just of condiments alone. Try eating a cheeseburger without katsup or mustard falling in your lap. I guess their can only be one King and he is about to die due to poor corporate management and customer service on ALL levels.

  15. All of you are so wrong on all points. Their food is wholesome and nutritious. I love it and would eat there every meal if I could. I eat fast food as least 10 times a week and I only weigh 280. I refuse to get to 300 lbs. I will cut back to 9 times if necessary.

  16. After reading that article how can you remotely come to the conclusion to can go bankrupt. Hyperbole as usual fron EA.

By the way. Donkey shit would be healthier for you than McDonalds or BK

I hear you - i WISH my business was only down 3.3% !
Try closer to 30% and I'm still here trying to make a go of it.
Give us a break with your 3.3%

  18. Unless there is something they are not telling us, it doesn't appear BK will be going under anytime soon, besides, if they do, they will just do some accounting adjustments and continue their operations.

God only knows what you are eating when you eat at these places. If they all went under, it would be a good thing.

People actually might have to start cooking in their own homes, rather than eating out at fast food (sic) joints.

  20. These toxic food-artifact "toilets"' going under is one of the GOOD things that comes out of a made-depressed economy. They pay their employees about 2.50 an hour, and most of these serial crack addict workers look diseased. Eating at a BK is a horrifying experience, and so many heath code regulations are violated, they must pay local boards of health money on the side to stay open. They seem like a good place to get shot or mugged also, so stay away.
Let's hope the Bankers' Depression of 2010 pulls all these places under...into the grave they deserve.

  21. Bk closed down in my small town in Atlantic Canada. Hope the other horrorburger joints follow suit eh.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So their quarterly profits were 50.2 million bucks and that's a sign that BK is about to go BK???

    ReplyDelete
  23. BK closed down in my Ontario town in CANADA too. "is struggling to arrest a seemingly unstoppable erosion in sales" statement shows its only a matter of time before CLOSURE. Can't you read between the lines? Trolls?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Some of you "guys" are real drama queens. Worse than my wife (almost). I've never had a horrifying expierince at a fast food place. I was mugged once by two guys with 2 guns, but there wasnt a fastfood place in site.

  25. The BKs around me seem to hire nothing but Hispanics that can hardly speak english. To avoid the excessive sauce on the burgers, you have to ask for light sauce, same as at Carl's Jr, which also seems to hire nothing but Hispanics. Problem with both is that they seem to "mug" the food.

For the most part, I'm avoiding fast food, especially french fries--none so far in 2010. My gold/silver addiction, and looting my employer with OT, continues, however.

Hey Numbnuts. Just because a BK closes doesn't mean they are ALL going under. I've also had a Pizza Hut and Quiznos franchise go under in my Ontario town. You know why? Poor F'ing management that turned them into sh%t holes. Again, just because I'm trying to be reasonable in saying I don't agree based ont he article that BK is even remotely close to being bankrupt doesn't make me a troll. It makes me a rationalal human being. Some of you should try it.

  27. I can't remmber the last time I was in The BK Lounge. I love the onion rings and the bacon double cheese burger with Mayo and onion only. Five Brothers Ham Burgers are the best in the world. It might not be the food but the customer service. Google the article " A Look At Customer Servive in the Recession" and maybe Burger King could learn a thing or two.

  28. I worked at one as a teen. We put spiders, wasps, bees, slugs, basically anything we could dig out of the window sill into people's food. 8:58 just thinks he hasn't had a horrific experience at a fast food place.

We'd do worst than the above at times.

Everyone has been on the receiving end, they just don't know it. As for pizza delivery place, LOL! - we drop your pizza on the nasty floor, anything goes. Welcome to reality.

  29. Interesting...one has to wonder about the slant put on this article. They claim that while McDonald's has branched out to serve salads, etc
that BK (they are insinuating) is not. That is not true. We went through a drive-through two weeks ago and my son had a salad.

  31. I used to work at a Pizza Hut and we never did anything nasty to the food. If I ever caught an employee doing anything like that I would have fired them on the spot. Quality is quality no matter where you work.

  32. great, so now everyone is off to pizza hut, for sure bk is finished. take that to the bank!

  33. Most modern food today has bug parts in it anyway. I dont mean a few parts per million either. I mean 7-8 bug parts per 100 grams of food. Welcome to the machine!

  34. To 1:06. We are talking about a company going under and your talking about your own loser life as a teen. Just an example of an unemployable American with mental problems. Im sure your living the good life now...NOT.

  35. Everyone seems to agree that the fast food shacks are nasty, and toxic. At least for once we are getting some agreement on here. Most of the trouble with fast food places is the people hired to work in them. Yes the food itself is not what you need for nutrition at all, but the workers in these places is the undoing of them, but what do you expect for the wages paid? Granted there are some clean McDonalds and others, but for the most part the "overall" score on these places is F.
What a pleasure to find some mom and pop owned cafe that has started up and these places are comming back in the small towns around the US. There have been several pop up where I live. Almost any will invite you back to see their kitchen if you ask. This is because they understand your concern and want to show you that they have a well operated business.
I suggest totally "dropping" visits to these fast food slop joints. Make them either go out of business, or straighten up. They will not be able to straighten up, because without the 90 mile an hour sloppy run and go business they have, they can't make enough profit to justify staying. For their acceptable level of profit (their corporate owners demand) they have to hire anyone and everyone at very low wages and take what that brings them for employees.
I think in time most will go---as people more carefully guard their dollars and health.

  36. The Pizza grease draws in insects, especially cockroaches. Most pizza joints are cesspools. No thanks. We had a phone that wasn't working. The buttons wouldn't push down. It turns out that the phone was so full of roaches they kept the buttons up.

Enjoy that pizza! I worked at a popular pizza joint for years. Trust me. Run!

  37. I have to chime in, 1:06, you and people like you totally disgust me! You little twerp, as is said, quality of work is quality of work, I don't give a hoot and a hollar if you make $1.25 or $50.00 per hour, you do what is morally right and ethically right. When you put critters in the very food that people place their trust in you and you do things such as this, it is criminal, and you know what they should do to criminals?

You and people like you are one of the reasons this great country is in the shape it is in today. You are lazy, you are stupid, you have no business ethics and above all you aren't smart enough to know when you live in the best country of all.

Again, you and people who think this is cool or cute....DISGUST me!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. You and you...

I think that person was probably just bs-ing. I love it when I still here that crap about "we live in the best country of all". That is always a sign of a truly brain-washed citizen.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 4:02 Give the person his/her due.
You do not needlessly call an American posting here brainwashed for being a proud part of this country.

You do not even know this person! For all you know this person gave the blood that saved the life of one of your parents !

As has been said on this site a million times before this ---- you move ---- to where ??

    Yeah; that's what I thought you'd say

People finding fault wherever they can but unwilling to substansiate or put forth the effort
    to reconcile

Talk is just that --------- talk

    ReplyDelete
  40. I believe he was right in pointing it out. Being proud is one thing. Proclaiming your country is the best is another, and in line with the kind of thinking of dumbericans who drive chevy's and have 'proud to be american' bumper-stickers proudly displayued while wearing american flag shirts and hats. They are the same people who waved flags after 911 in step with the bush administration and gladly accepted the patriot bill like a friendly walk in the park on a sunday afternoon.

Patriotism and flag worship are both signs of blind allegiance. I don't know the person but that is not a inaccurate statement to make.

  41. they can close all the burger kings down as far as I am concerned. It seems the only one getting their orders right are the mexicans who can speak to the mexican order taker. customer service sucks. they just closed down all the jack in the boxes saying because of bad economy. I say, it's because of your customer service and employees suck. the staff at our Madison, tn location looked like thugs with their pants dragging and hats off to the side and couldn't speak proper english. maybe it's better these places do close so people will spend more time at home making their own food.
